Bihar Government proposed to set up 242 armed fighting companies of Police in the State. Among the proposed 242 companies, 44 will be a dedicated force to deal with rioting while the remaining will be engaged in operations against the Maoists and organized crime.

A CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Arvind Kumar Verma, was arrested from Patanbigha village in Nalanda District.

Describing Naxalism as a "major challenge" to democracy, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged the Centre to generously fund the States on development to bridge regional disparity and end the sense of deprivation of the people.

June 4

A CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Bharat Thakur, was arrested by Police after a raid on a house in Auramalikana village of Sheohar District.

Acting on a tip-off, Patna Police arrested a CPI-Maoist 'area commander', Gopal Paswan, from Daulatpur village under Bhagwanganj Police Station area in Patna District.

June 5

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar maintained that a multi-dimensional strategy based on the theme of governance with justice was required. He said "We must work together to launch serious developmental schemes so that misdirected people can be brought back into the socio-economic mainstream."

Three CPI-Maoist cadres were arrested along with weapons from a village in Rajepur Police Station area in East Champaran District.

Purnia District Police arrested the 'north-east zone area commander' of the CPI-Maoist, Kailash Mandal, at Dumari village under Tikkapati Police Station under Dhamdaha Sub-division in Purnia District.

June 13

A group of around 200 CPI-Maoist cadres attacked the Dhanbad-Patna Intercity Express at the Bhalui halt near Jamui District in Bihar, killing three persons and injuring six passengers. The Maoists decamped with three rifles, including one AK 47 and two INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifles.

A CRPF constable was injured in an exchange of fire with Maoists that took place during a routine patrolling operation in the Chhatarbanda forests in Gaya District.

Union Home ministry officials said Bihar Police has all but stopped operations against the Maoists, frittering away gains made over the last five years. Twenty-one civilians have died in Maoist attacks in Bihar until May 31 this year, more than double the number (10) killed over the same period in 2012, according to the Union Home Ministry. More Security Personnel have died in Maoist attacks in the first five months of 2013 than in the corresponding months of 2012. Only 99 Maoists were arrested and two surrendered until May 31 this year; by contrast, 204 Maoists were arrested and 34 surrendered in the first five months of 2012.

June 15

Maoists blew up a state-run middle school in Bhulsumia village in Jamui District. More than 50 armed Maoists took part in the attack.

June 17

The Central Government has sent a fresh battalion of SSB, comprising about 1,000 personnel, for undertaking anti-Naxal operations in Bihar.

June 18

Kapildeo Yadav alias Indrajeet, the 'commander' of Eastern Regional Bureau of the CPI-Maoist in Jharkhand, was arrested from Ishwar Dayal Hospital, a private nursing home in Patna District.

June 19

Acting on a tip off, Police arrested a CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Bhola Ram, from Basata village under Telpa Police Station limits in Arwal District.

June 24

CPI-Maoist cadres, dressed in Police uniform, attacked the house of a Chairman of Primary Agriculture Credit Society, killing two persons and injuring another at Mankauli village in Kudhni of Muzaffarpur District.

The CRPF and Police personnel conducting Operation Prahar recovered a can bomb, having pressure release technique, planted by the CPI-Maoist near a road bridge under Pakaridayal Police Station in East Champaran District.

Around 150 hardcore Maoists of Jharkhand have sneaked into this area of East Champaran, Sheohar and Muzaffarpur Districts and their resurgence has rung alarm bells.

A CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Chandrashekhar Sahni, was arrested along with weapons from Baligaon village in Gandak riverine area of Saran District of Bihar.

July 3

The Bihar cabinet approved the Home Department's proposal to create 25 additional units of STF in order to contain the onslaught of LWE in the State.

July 8

CPI-Maoist cadre Shambu Yadav, wanted in several cases of violence, was arrested at Dhamni village in Aurangabad District. However, two of his associates escaped on a motorcycle.

July 12

Two CPI-Maoist cadres were arrested along with arms and ammunition from Nawada District.

July 15

The Police unearthed an illegal mini-gun factory in Bramani forest area, known to be a CPI-Maoist stronghold, in Bihar's Munger District and recovered magazines, barrels and unassembled pistol kits.

July 17

At least three Special Auxiliary Police troopers and two guards of a private road construction company were killed and seven others injured when armed group of over 125 CPI-Maoist cadres attacked a base camp of the company at Goh in Aurangabad District of Bihar.

The toll in the CPI-Maoist attack targeting SF personnel guarding a construction site in Aurangabad District of Bihar has risen to six. Three personnel of Special Auxiliary Police, two private security guards and the driver of a bus in which the Police reinforcement was being moved to the spot from Koch in Gaya District have died, ADG, Law and Order, S. K. Bhardwaj said.

July 18

Bihar Jharkhand North Chhattisgarh Special Area Committee Spokesperson Gopalji expressed 'grief' over the death of SF personnel in Aurangabad attack. Issuing a press statement, Gopalji said their aim was to snatch firearms from security personnel so that they can equip common man with weapons and carry on their fight against the ongoing operation 'green hunt'.

CPI-Maoist cadres demolished an under-construction CRPF camp on the outskirts of Basuachak village under Chanan block in Lakhisarai District of Bihar.

August 2

CPI-Maoist blew up a railway track near Gaya District disrupting traffic on the Gaya-Mugalsari route of East Central Railway. Gaya Railway DSP Sunil Kumar said that the explosion on the track between Taraiya and Guraru railway station occurred around 11 pm barely 20 minutes after the pilot engine of Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani train crossed the area.

August 4

CPI-Maoist cadres damaged a new building, which was to become a Police Station in Aurangabad District.

August 11

Bihar DGP Abhayanand said that acting on a tip off Aurangabad District Police arrested a CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Binda Singh, from a hideout in Sonbarsa village of Aurangabad District.

August 20

SFs during a combing operation in the Lutua forest area under Banke Bazaar Police Station of Gaya District recovered three pressure cooker IEDs, 57 pipe bombs, about 50 kilograms of gelatin, CPI-Maoist literature, uniforms and other belongings.

August 22

Naxalites demanded extortion money amounting to INR 16.5 million from Vishwanath Sharma Construction Company, engaged in building a bridge over Budhi Gandak at Panapur in Muzaffarpur District.

August 24

A CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Pramod Koda, was arrested from Jatkutiya village under Dharhara Police Station area of Munger District. Acting on a tip off, the Police raided the village and arrested Koda, who is a resident of Jatkutiya village, Superintendent of Police (SP) Navin Chandra Jha said.

September 5

CPI-Maoist cadres severed the limbs of a farmer and then shot him dead near Hajipur, the headquarters of Vaishali District for refusing to pay 'tax' to the outfit.

September 6

SF recovered large quantity of explosives from a CPI-Maoist hideout in a village under Imamganj Police Station area in Gaya District.

September 11

A massive 'mobilisation campaign' of Naxal groups, including CPI-Maoist, is learnt to be taking place in the jungles of Jamui District located in the dense jungles near the Bihar-Jharkhand State boundary. More than 500 LWE cadres from different States have already gathered at the venue and over thousand are scheduled to arrive at the place in coming week.

September 14

Four CPI-Maoist cadres, identified as Mohan Paswan, Rudal Paswan, Ram Swaroop Mahto and Mahesh Mahto, have been arrested during a joint operation conducted by State Police and CRPF personnel in East Champaran District.

The CPI-Maoist is targetting one of its splinter groups, Azad Hind Fauj in East Champaran and Sheohar Districts. On September 14, the Maoists distributed pamphlets declaring that they will break the nexus between of Police and AHF. The Uttar Pradesh-Bihar Zonal Committee of the Maoist organization has asked the public to cooperate or face dire consequences.

September 18

Five CPI-Maoist cadres, including a self-styled 'area commander' of Maoist Communist Centre identified as Kailash Thakur, were arrested from different places in Sheohar District.

Police have confiscated an illegal immovable asset of a CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Adhiklal Mandal in Paharpur village of Munger District.

September 20

One STF trooper was killed and two others received serious injuries as armed CPI-Maoist cadres ambushed a Police patrolling squad in Giddheshwar forest area under Khaira Police Station in Jamui District.

Maoists attacked an under-construction building meant for CRPF camp near Parasi Mod (Garahi village) under Khaira Police Station in Jamui District after midnight on the intervening night of September 19 and September 20.

September 22

Four Naxal sympathisers were arrested in Saraiya area of Kaimur District.

October 4

The EOU of Bihar Police stumbled upon a diary of a Rohtas-based kendu leaf supplier having names of top CPI-Maoist leaders and some politicians receiving kickbacks from him over the past two decades.

October 5

The Bihar Police have said that barring stray incidents, the bandh in Bihar to protest the killing of CPI-Maoist cadres in Odisha passed off peacefully.

After a prolonged lull, about 70 CPI-Maoist cadres including some women blasted an abandoned house of a former mukhiya (headman) Suresh Prasad Singh at about 2 am at village Chakki Sohagpur under Paroo Police Station in Muzaffarpur District.

Bihar Police arrested a self-styled CPI-Maoist 'zonal commander' from Central Kolkata in West Bengal and took him to Gaya District where a local court remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.

October 17

CPI-Maoist cadres detonated a cane bomb - a trademark IED used by them - to blow up a vehicle, killing all its seven occupants near Pathara village in Aurangabad District.

October 19

Bihar Police in a drive against CPI-Maoist leaders under UAPA have sized movable property worth INR 20 billion. They have also seized approximately 44 acres of land.

An official said drawing upon Bihar's success the Centre has asked eight other Maoist-hit states to effect property seizures under UAPA provisions to weaken extremists' leaders by way of their individual financial clout.

Impressed by Bihar Police's approach of hitting the Maoist leaders financially by confiscating their property under the UAPA, the Central Government has decided to adopt it. The UMHA has issued directions to the Chief Secretaries and DGP in Naxal affected states to start implementing the UAPA on Maoists.

October 24

A joint team of STF and Police arrested nine CPI-Maoist cadres including two hardcore ones with weapons from East Champaran District.

A group of 25 Maoists travelling in a truck set afire a private bus at Ramleela Gachhi under Deoria Police Station area and a mobile tower at Pokhraira village under Jaintpur Police outpost in Muzaffarpur District.

The bandh call given by CPI-Maoist cadres to register their protest against the Laxmanpur Bathe judgment, in which all the convicts including the 16 earlier awarded death sentences by the trial court, were acquitted by the Patna High Court for lack of evidence, brought life to a near standstill in the major part of Sherghati Sub-Division of Gaya District.

October 29

The JIC headed by the Cabinet Secretary has criticised the Bihar Police and central SFs for not carrying out counter-intelligence operations against CPI-Maoist.

November 4

Two CPI-Maoist cadres, identified as Nirmal Paswan alias Mutwar and Nandan Vishwakarma, were arrested by the STF from Railway Station Road under Town Police Station area in Bihar's Jehanabad District., while they were on way to purchase arms from a supplier. The duo belonged to Palamu District of Jharkhand.

November 7

The Bihar Government announced reward of INR 300,000-500,000 for the capture of seven top CPI-Maoist leaders.

November 10

The Maoists killed three persons and injured as many at Amkola village in Gaya District. Among the dead was one Sanjay Yadav, who had recently deserted the Maoist rank. Maoists suspected Yadav leaked information to the Police leading to several raids on Maoists and recovery of arms and ammunition.

November 12

A CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Bhim Turi, was arrested from Sonebarsa village in Munger District of Bihar.

SFs seized huge quantity of explosives from a Maoist hideout in Charkhapathar area in Bhelwaghati forest in Bihar's Jamui District. The seizure included about 100 kg Ammonium Nitrate contained in three sacks, nine LPG cylinders, two IEDs, two packet power gels, besides food materials.

November 14

The Gaya District Police registered a case against a CRPF assistant commandant, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, posted in Barachatti (Gaya), on charges of leaking crucial information on security operations to the CPI-Maoist. Confirming this, IG (Operations) Amit Kumar said Yadav was being interrogated, and was likely to be arrested.

November 18

CRPF officer Sanjay Yadav, who allegedly leaked movements of troops to the CPI-Maoist in Bihar, was arrested. CRPF and Bihar Police officers interrogated him in Patna for four days before arresting him. Yadav, an assistant commandant with the CRPF's 159 battalion, was posted in Gaya, one of Bihar's Maoist-affected Districts. Bihar Police had filed an FIR against him at Imamganj Police Station on November 14.

The joint intelligence committee of the Centre has accused Bihar Government of being soft on the CPI-Maoist resulting in a 41% increase in killings by Maoists this year compared to the previous year.

November 21

The STF seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition and arrested three alleged CPI-Maoist cadres in Gaya District of Bihar. The alleged Maoists have been identified as Shalingram Yadav, his brother Krishna Yadav and Chander Bhogta. Kumar. The operation was conducted near Sondaha and Dumri villages, to the south of Chothi Hills, under the Bankebazar Police Station.

The East Champaran District Police, in a raid conducted jointly with CRPF and SSB, arrested Hemant Paswan, CPI-Maoist 'zonal commander' of west Bihar and his wife Anju alias Simran, secretary of Nari Mukti Morcha, from village Mirazapur under Patahi Police Station when they were planning to launch a major offensive in bordering areas of the District.

November 25

Patna Police arrested an 'area commander' of the CPI-Maoist, Jogendra Ravidas alias Lighter, from village Bara under the Bhagwanganj Police Station area of Patna District. He was considered to an expert in making bombs. He was active in Patna, Gaya, Jehanabad, Arwal and Aurangabad Districts.

November 28

CPI-Maoist issued death threats against four villagers through posters and pamphlets pasted at Bamdah village in Jamui District and at some public places on the Jamui-Chakai road.

Avinash, a spokesperson of CPI-Maoist, recently appealed to Armed Force personnel deployed in this region to return their service weapons and go back to their native places.

November 29

SFs arrested two CPI-Maoist cadres, Surendra Mehta and Satyendra Choudhary, from Aurangabad District.

November 30

Three Policemen were killed and two others injured as 20-odd cadres of CPI-Maoist attacked a Police team escorting the Patna-bound Sahebganj-Danapur Intercity Express near Jamalpur city in Munger District. After shooting the Policemen, the Maoists decamped with four rifles of the Policemen.

December 1

A day after CPI-Maoist cadres shot dead three BMP personnel and injured two others in a running train, Security Forces launched a massive combing and search operation to nab the perpetrators reportedly hiding in the forests of Bihar's Munger District.

December 2

The Patna Police arrested two CPI-Maoist cadres from separate places under Sigori and Khiri Mor Police Station areas in Patna District. Police said an 'area commander' of CPI-Maoist, Gurudev Yadav, was arrested in the raid conducted at a hideout near Kanhaura Mor of Hadinagar village. He was arrested with one country-made pistol and six live cartridges. On his information, a 'zonal commander', Sunil Kahar, was arrested from Mungli Tola Ramruchavigha under Khiri Mor police station area.

December 3

At least eight Policemen on patrolling duty were killed in a Maoist attack near Nabinagar in Aurangabad District. The Policemen were traveling in a jeep that was blown up by a landmine on its way from Nabinagar to Tandwa. A Police inspector, five troopers of the Special Auxiliary Force, the driver and a trooper of the Bihar Military Police were killed in the attack.

December 6

Three CPI-Maoist cadres, including a woman, were arrested by the Security Forces from Harni forests in Khaira Police Station area in Bihar's Jamui District during a combing operation.

December 9

Police seized 150 blankets meant for the CPI-Maoist cadres from the house of the mukhiya (head of village level local self-government institution) of Harni village under the Khaira Police Station area in Bihar's Jamui District. The Mukhiya, identified as Mahesh Tanti, was arrested.

December 11

In an exchange of fire between the CPI-Maoist and their rival group TPC, two Maoists were killed and several others injured at Dhangai village in Gaya District.

The BJP leaders from Bihar seem to be on the hit-list of the IM and the CPI-Maoist. According to a report the MHA has sent a letter to the Patna Police stating that BJP MP Shahnawaz Hussain could be a likely target of the IM.

December 14

An arrested Maoist cadre said that Bihar is a soft target for the Maoists to build their arsenal and plan strikes. The revelation, made by Manish Marandi alias Manbel Marandi (25), who was arrested in Deori area of Giridih District of Jharkhand on December 14, comes days after Union Minister of Home Affairs Sushil Kumar Shinde said Bihar was soft on Maoists and the rebels have realized that the state is a soft target to build their arsenal and they may resort to spectacular strikes in the future.

CPI-Maoist cadres blew up an Airtel mobile phone tower at Bage Bar village under Kothi Police Station in Gaya District. The tower was blown up on the eve of the Maoist-sponsored bandh to register protest against the ongoing 'Operation Greenhunt'.

December 15

Four CPI-Maoist cadres involved in at least six cases were arrested in a joint operation of the Police and CRPF and a rich haul of arms and ammunition recovered in East Champaran District. The arrested Maoists have been identified as Baidyanath Paswan alias Baidjee alias Mukhiyajee, Maheshwar Singh, Vijay Kumar Ram and an underage.

Bihar has initiated the process to confiscate the properties of 47 Maoists. Two months back, Bihar was the first state to begin the process of confiscating properties of half-a-dozen Maoists under Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

December 16
