January 20

Rizwana Begam, a surrendered CPI-Maoist, who was accused in a case registered in Yapaladinni Police Station, was produced before II Additional Judicial Magistrate Court in Raichur. "She surrendered before the Chikkamagaluru police three months ago and was produced in the court here in connection with the pending case," Chetan Singh Rathore, SP, said.

January 27

The RPF of Bangalore Railway Division arrested a Naxal, in connection to derail the Chalukya Express on December last year in Tamil Nadu, at Bengaluru District. The Naxal has now been handed over to the Q branch of the Tamil Nadu Police. He has confessed to being part of a Naxal outfit based in Kerala.

Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Affairs and Sports declared the Naxalite-affected Amasebail GP as the first fully solar GP in Udupi District of Karnataka. The Amasebail GP has three villages - Amasebail, Rattady and Machattu - with 1,872 houses.

June 5

Three CPI-Maoist cadres surrendered to the members of the State-appointed panel, AK Subbaiah and Gaurilankesh in Chikkamagaluru District. The surrendered Maoists are identified as Kanyakumari (30), of Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru, her husband Shivu aka Jnanadev of Bengaluru and Chennamma aka Suma (32), of Gadag. Of the three Maoists, Kanyakumari has 33 criminal cases pending against her and carried a reward of INR 500,000 on her head. Shivu, whose only involvement in the operation has been through his association with Kanyakumari. Chennamma, who has been acquitted in the three cases that were filed against her, is free. Chennamma's husband Neelamegham was arrested by Tamil Nadu Police two years ago, and is still in prison.

Several banners in support of the CPI-Maoist movement were spotted at Bukudibail in Sringeri of Chikkamagaluru District. According to the Police, these banners were spotted in eight places surrounding a shop located opposite the bus stand. The messages on the banner were against the State and Central Governments. According to eye witnesses, it addressed issues opposing the Kasturirangan report, Tiger Project, GST, Demonetization, caste-based issues and so on. They have also decided to observe Martyrs' Day in memory of Kuppuswamy and Ajitha who were killed Nilambur forest in Kerala in 2016. The banners also called upon people to fulfill the wish of the Kuppuswamy and Ajitha. According to sources, it is learnt that the total number of CPI-Maoist cadres currently active in the region could be less than 10. They have been trying to develop a tri-junction of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu as a suitable operational base. Their movement was reportedly observed during the second week of May in the forest.

August 21

CPI-Maoist cadre identified as Eshwar alias Veeramanai, an accused in the killing of a teacher in 2008, was produced at the session's court by the Police in Udupi District. Veeramanai had planned and executed the murder of teacher, Seetanadi Bhoja Shetty, by shooting at him in front of the gate near his home within Hebri Police Station limits in the District on May 15, 2008. The court adjourned the case to November 15 for framing of charges.

September 11

Former CPI-Maoist leaders Sirimane Nagaraj and Noor Sridhar have denied the possibility of the role of Naxals in Gauri Lankesh's murder. They said that Naxalites were being blamed to "bury the truth". "Since all suspicions point towards the Hindu right-wing, investigation should begin from them," they said. At a press conference in Bengaluru, Sridhar said that there was no enmity between Gauri Lankesh and Naxals as suspected by some people. "The CPI (Maoist) is not a mafia. Whenever they have killed someone in the past, they have left a poster owning responsibility and even mentioning the reason for the act," he said, pointing to differences in the modus operandi. Sridhar said it was unfortunate that Vikram Gowda, an alleged member of the Naxal movement, was being falsely accused of the killing by a section of media.

November 22

Acting on the suspicion that CPI-Maoist cadres may have entered the Bandipur National Park, and its surrounding areas, the ANF, DAR Police and forest department launched a joint combing operation in Chamarajanagar District. The personnel of ANF, DAR and forest department were divided into two separate groups. While Chamarajanagar SP, Dharmendra Kumar Meena led the 60-member ream that carried out the operation in Kundakere, Mulapura and Karapura forest areas and along the banks of Mayar River. The second team, led by ASP, MS Geeta, on the other hand, covered Mulehole, Kalkere and surrounding areas. This team comprised around 60 personnel. Sources said that neither team managed to find any information pertaining to Naxal activities during their respective operations. Adding that the operation would continue on November 23, a Police said, "Combing operations will be carried out near the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border and near the Kerala border. We did not uncover any information on Wednesday."
