2011

May 6: Troops in the East recovered four APMs and one hand grenade from Welikanda in Polonnaruwa District and Vandaramulla area in Batticaloa District.

May 4: Troops in the East recovered one 81-mm mortar bomb, four APMs , one Rocket Propeller Grenade (RPG), one 60 -mm mortar bomb and one 82-mm mortar bomb from Pankulam, Muttur and Mukaral areas in Trincomalee District.

May 3: Troops in the East recovered four APMs from Muttur and Punani areas in Batticaloa District.

April 30: Troops in the East recovered one hand grenade from Sittandi area in Batticaloa District.

April 29: Troops in the East recovered nine APM from Punani and Miraodei areas in Batticaloa District.

April 24: Troops in the East recovered15 APMs, one HF base station, hand grenades and six 40-mm grenade launcher bombs from Poonagar, Soruwila and Thiraimadu areas in Trincomalee District.

April 22: In the East troops recovered one 60-mm High Explosive (HE) bomb, one 60-mm mortar bomb and three APMs from Komari, Mawadivembu, Kokkadicholai and Pump House Camp areas in Batticaloa District.

Navy troops recovered six T-56 weapons, 20 T-56 magazines, one T-81 weapon, five T-81 magazines, one 40-mm grenade launcher, 56 40-mm grenade launcher bombs, six handsets, one I-com set with antenna, three handset antennas, one claymore blasting device, 1500 rounds of MPMG ammunition, 1100 rounds of M-16 ammunition, 1500 rounds of T-56 ammunition and 163 rounds of 9-mm pistol ammunition from Madurankulam area.

April 13: Troops in the East recovered one claymore mine, six 60-mm mortar bombs, two T-56 magazines and three APMs from Kadavan and Kalladi in Puttlam District.

April 11: In the East, Special Task Force (STF) personnel recovered six rocket launchers, 226 T 56 bullets, and 40 grenades in Valachchenai, Batticaloa District. The STF has reportedly made the discovery following a tip off from a former LTTE cadre.

April 8: Troops in the East recovered 11 APMs and one hand grenade from Welikanda and Punani areas in Batticaloa District.

A Sri Lankan court issued open arrest warrants against six prominent cadres of the LTTE believed to be living overseas. The court order will be implemented through the Interpol.

November 28: Army has managed to clear over 300,000 mines in the Northern and Eastern Provinces in the country. Military Spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala has told the local media that the Army Field Engineers have so far cleared over 306,000 mines in a land area of 1,863 square kilometres in the North and East

November 22: Police recovered one hand grenade from Eravur area in Batticaloa District.

July 18: Police recovered one T-56 weapon and two hand grenades from Verugal area of Trincomalee District on July 18, according to Sri Lanka Army report.

July 14: SFs found a hand grenade at Kiran in Batticaloa District.

July 15: The Police recovered four hand grenades and 116 rounds of T-56-mm ammunition from Uppuweli area of Trincomalee District.

July 6: Police in the Kotahena area of Colombo District and Sambalthivu area of Trincomalee District recovered two hand grenades, one claymore mine, two birth certificates, one education certificate, a principal’s seal, two identity cards, one driving licence and one mobile phone.

June 15: Sri Lanka naval troops attached to Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) Walagamba seized a haul of gelignite hidden in a vehicle at a road block at the Vadalikulam junction in Eastern Naval Area of Trincomalee District. The troops acting on information received apprehended the haul of gelignite weighing approximately 30 kilograms while the stock was being transported. The troops seized the vehicle and arrested the persons.

Further, Naval troops attached to SLNS Vijayaba in the Eastern Naval Command, arrested another person yesterday in Kumburuppidi area for possessing dynamite charges used for illegal fishing. The suspect in his possession had 3 dynamite charges, a pair of diving fins, a pair of goggles, and a face mask. He has been handed over to the Kuchchaweli Police for further investigations.

June 11: The Police and troops in the east recovered 60-mm mortar launcher without its base plate, one T-56 weapon, two T-56 magazines, 60 rounds of T-56 ammunition, five hand grenades, one 40-mm grenade launcher, two 40-mm grenades, five 60-mm mortar bombs from Mudagala south areas in Ampara District during search operations.

June 3: In the east troops on their search and clear operations also recovered three T-56 weapons, three T-56 magazines, two hundred rounds of T-56 ammunition, four Light Machine Gun links (LMG), one micro pistol, one micro pistol magazine, one part of an AP mine and two unidentified devices from Mankerni in Batticaloa area.

May 31: Police recovered hand grenade in Periyaurani area of Ampara District.

May 22: Troops in the east also recovered one anti-personnel mine from Pankulama area, of Trincomalee District.

May 18: The Police in the Ampara District recovered one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine and 23 rounds of T-56 ammunition from Alayadiwembu area.

May 9: The Serunuwara Police during a search operation in Trincomalee District recovered six 81-mm mortar bombs, 48 numbers of 81-mm bomb chargers, one RPG bomb, five anti personnel mines and four anti personnel mine fuses.

April 29: Troops in the east recovered eight T-56 weapons, ten T-56 magazines, one claymore mine and 5 kilograms of C-4 explosives from Kumana area of Ampara District during a search operation.

The Wakarai Police in Batticaloa District recovered 55 anti-personnel mines, 57 anti-personnel mine fuses, 66 electronic detonators, nine built-up can bombs, one firing device and two metres length of detonator cord from Angodavillu area.

April 28: Troops in the east recovered eight anti-personnel mines from Kandakadu area in Batticaloa District during a search operation.

April 26: Troops recovered two anti-personnel mines and one 60-mm mortar bomb from Kandakadu area in Batticaloa District during a search operation.

April 11: Troops in the east recovered two T-56 weapons, three 120-mm mortar bombs, five detonators, one hand grenade, two T-56 ammunition boxes and one unidentified grenade launcher from Kaluwankerni area in Batticaloa during a search operation.

March 23: Troops during search and clear operations in the Palamunai area of Ampara District recovered one T-56 magazine and 22 rounds of 7.62 x 39-mm ammunition.

March 21: The Valachchenai Police in Batticaloa District recovered one hand grenade during a search operation in Valachchenai .

March 6: Army Intelligence troops engaged in a combined search operation with the special operation unit troops of Sri Lanka Air Force in Kadawana area in Trincomalee District recovered one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG), 600 rounds of MPMG ammunition, two T-81 weapons, two T-81 magazines, seven T-56 weapons, 23 T-56 magazines, 750 rounds of Light Machine Gun (LMG) ammunition, one 40-mm grenade launcher, nine 40-mm bombs and 44 hand grenades.

March 4: Troops in the East recovered one anti-personnel mine in the Kallar area of Batticaloa District.

March 2: The Special Task Force in Ampara District recovered one T 56 weapon, two magazines, 59 rounds of T 56 ammunition, two hand grenades and one I-Com communication set during a search operation in the Akkaraipattu area.

February 25: Trincomalee Police seized a T-56 weapon hidden in a thicket on a coconut estate in Kadakarachchena village. It was seized by a group of Police led by the Officer in Charge of the Trincomalee District Intelligence Unit, Sub Inspector Subasinghe.

February 24: Troops during search operations in the Kallar area of Trincomalee District recovered two anti-personnel mines.

February 22: Troops in the east, during their search operations in Serunuwara area of Trincomalee District recovered two hand grenades and 91 round of T-56 ammunition.

The Police conducting a separate operation in the Eastern Province recovered eight anti-personnel mines from the areas of Panichchiyankulam and Kolakanawadiya.

February 3: Troops operating in the East recovered four T-56 weapons, one T-56 magazine, four 60 mm mortar bombs, three 81 mm mortar bombs, eight Rocket Propeller Grenades, five claymore mines, 1248 rounds of 2.62 x 19-mm ammunition, 1761 rounds of training ammunition, two anti-personnel mines, four radio communication sets, one remote controller, 29 feet long detonator cord, five Light Machine Gun containers, eight Multi Purpose Machine Gun containers, 170 rounds of 12.7-mm ammunition and 687 rounds of MPMG ammunition during a search operation in the Muthugala area of  Batticaloa District.

January 21: Police in Trincomalee District during a search operation recovered one T-56 weapon with a magazine and 25 rounds of T-56 ammunition from Serunuwara area.

January 12: The troops recovered six 60-mm mortar bombs, three anti-personnel mines, six hundred 60-mm mortar chargers, five hand grenades, 752 rounds of T-56 ammunition, 72 rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, 60 rounds of 5.56 ammunition and seven shotgun cartridges from the Muttur area of Trincomalee District.

January 11: Trincomalee Police recovered two T-56 weapons, seven T-56 magazines, 391 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one radio set, one night vision device, two plastic boxes with chargers and one pouch from the Iluppukulam and Muttur areas.

2009

December 22: The Security Forces recovered 100 grams of explosives, 25 meters of detonator cord and two hand grenades during a search operation conducted in the Thissapura area of Trincomalee District, according to a Sri Lanka Army report.

December 21: Army troops recovered one T-56 weapon from the Vinayagapuram area of Batticaloa District.

December 20: Troops recovered one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine and 22 rounds of T-56 ammunition during search operation in the Uppuweli and Pirapiddi areas of Trincomalee District.

The troops recovered 29 rounds of T-56 ammunition from the Kurundankal area of Anuradhapura District.

December 7: The Trincomalee Police following information recovered one T-56 weapon, one magazine and twenty-eight rounds of T-56 ammunition from the Sinnapuram area of Batticaloa District.

Army intelligence in Mandaveli recovered two T-56 weapons, six T-56 magazines, two claymore mines, six hand grenades, 10 electric detonators and 40 kilograms of TNT explosives while they had been kept hidden in a structure.

A large stock of C4 explosives and arms were recovered by Police and the Army in two separate locations in the Batticaloa area. Kandy Police Intelligence Unit launched a search operation in the Dangeliyadda area and unearthed 125 kilograms of C4 explosives following information provided by a LTTE suspect, Police said.

December 6: Police intelligence service personnel serving in the Kumalawadi area of Batticaloa District recovered two T-56 weapons, three hundred and 10 rounds of T-56 ammunition, 10 T-56 magazines and two knives.

A special team from Kandy Police on information conducted a joint search operation with Army troops in the Dangeliyadda area and recovered 125 kilograms of C4 explosives buried in the area.

The troops in the Uppuvelli area of Trincomalee District recovered two claymore mines.

December 1: Troops during a search operation in the Meegasooriyapura area of Trincomalee District recovered one hand grenade.

November 29: Police in Batticaloa District recovered five Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), 100 T-56 magazines, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) drum, one radio communication set, 150pen torch batteries, 47 LTTE flags, 20 micro cassettes and packets of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) documents from the Narakamulla area.

Troops in the Thaladi area of Trincomalee District recovered nine 60-mm mortar bombs, 37 hand grenades, one electric detonator, one cyanide capsule and three LTTE dog tags. A day earlier, Kanthale Police recovered documents and posters belonging to the TRO.

November 27: The troops in Batticaloa District recovered one suicide kit, one remote controller, three claymore mines and six hand grenades during a search operation conducted in the Kandapuram area.

November 23: The troops recovered one T-56 weapon and one T-56 magazine along with three rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, one claymore mine, one anti-personnel mine and one Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) uniform from the Kibulawala area of Trincomalee District.

November 21: The troops in the Verugal area of Trincomalee District recovered one 40-mm grenade launcher, eleven 40-mm grenade launcher cartridges and two hand grenades.

Police personnel in the Morawewa area found 25500 rounds of T-56 ammunition.

November 20: Troops found four shotguns and two corroded trap gun barrels from the Melancholia area of Batticaloa District in the East.

November 17: The Criminal Investigations Department with the assistance of the Trincomalee Police recovered satellite equipment of the LTTE during a search operation in the Serunuwara area of Trincomalee District. The Senior Superintendent of Police, I. M. Karunaratne, said a satellite antenna, two satellite phones, several LTTE uniforms and a photo album of its slain chief Velupillai Prabhakaran were part of the seizure.

November 15: An explosion at Central Camp, a small hamlet in the Ampara District, injured two people, reports Colombo Page. The Senior Superintendent of Police, I.M. Karunaratna, said at least two persons were injured in the hand grenade blast.

The troops in Batticaloa District recovered one hand grenade from the Kandakuda Farm.

November 10: Troops also found 293 three dry cells and 567 pen torch batteries from the Mudagala South in Batticaloa District.

November 9: The LTTE’s Eastern Province leader Ram, who had escaped from the Army, was re-arrested. The Army arrested him following a massive search operation conducted in the Minneriya forests. Ram had been under interrogation in an Army camp in the Giritale area of Polonnaruwa Distict, when he escaped on November 7. With the escape of Ram, the Army commenced a search operation with over 3,000 soldiers deployed to trace him down. He was arrested while he was hiding in the forests near the Minneriya tank. Ram had been appointed to the leadership of the LTTE’s Eastern Province following the defection of Karuna Amman. He had a through knowledge of the terrain in the East and led a number of attacks against the Security Forces. Ram had left for the North after his cadres were killed by the Special Task Force personnel during several clashes following LTTE’s defeat in the East.

November 5: Police recovered a massive haul of explosives from Sampur area in Trincomalee District. Police spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General Nimal Mediwaka said that a special investigation unit of Vavuniya Police recovered 50 kilograms of C4 explosives. According to the Police spokesman the explosives were recovered based on information received from a former LTTE cadre who is currently in custody.

November 3: The troops conducted search operations in the Kudumbilai area of Batticaloa District and recovered five hand grenades.

November 2: The troops recovered two anti-personnel mines from the Kallaru area of Trincomalee District.

Naval troops conducted search operations in Trincomalee and found 58500 rounds of T-56 ammunition and 150 metres of camouflage cloth from hospital area.

October 25: Troops recovered eleven 82-mm mortar bombs, thirty-eight 82-mm mortar bomb fuses, two T-56 weapons, eight T-56 magazines, 635 rounds of T-56 ammunition, two SFG hand grenades, two Rocket Propelled Grenades, one kilogram of C-4 explosives and 40 metres long detonator code during search operations in the Vakarai and Kuburumulla areas of Batticaloa District.

October 24: Police arrested a 21-year-old female cadre of the LTTE, identified as Yal Nadde, near the 5th mile post at Akkaraipaththu on information received from the public.

October 23: During another search operation in the Kulaththamadu area of Batticaloa, the SFs found one claymore mine of 1.5 kilogram with two remote controllers, two 82 hand grenades, six APM with fuses, four I-com radio sets, one detonator cord of 1.5 metres and two electric detonators.

Troops of the 231 Brigade in during their search and clear operations in the Kulaththamadu area of Batticaloa District recovered one claymore mine of 1.5 kilograms with two remote controllers, two 82 hand grenades, six anti-personnel mines (APMs) with fuses, four I-com radio sets, one detonator cord of 1.5 metres and two electric detonators.

Police arrested a prominent female area leader of the LTTE in Ampara. Police spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Nimal Mediwaka said the suspected female LTTE leader has been arrested in a search operation launched by the Special Task Force (STF) in the area.

October 20: One anti-personnel mine was recovered by the troops during a search operation in the Navaladi area of Batticaloa District.

During another search operation at the Tractor Junction area of Verugal in Trincomalee District, the Navy troops found one 120-mm mortar launcher, one base plate and one bipod.

October 18: Three shot guns were recovered by the troops during a search operation conducted in the Pariyanmittangolla area of Batticaloa District.

October 17: Troops recovered 15 T-56 magazines, one T-81 magazine, one LMG drum, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun drum, one LMG link, five belt orders, two pouches and one hand grenade during a search operation in the Kaddaravikulam area of Trincomalee District.

Police arrested a suspect in the Uppuvelli Police area along with a hand grenade and in a subsequent search operation recovered one satellite phone, one phone charger, six pen torch batteries, one pen torch battery charger, one antenna, one remote controller and one oil bottle.

October 14: Troops in the Vandaramoolai area of Batticaloa District recovered a claymore mine weighing eight kilograms.

Police in the Uppuvelli area of Trincomalee District recovered six hand grenades.

October 8: A hand grenade was recovered by the troops from the Iranchurachenei area of Batticaloa District.

October 4: The Thambalagamuwa Police recovered a 12-bore gun during a raid at Portkeni in the Trincomalee District.

October 3: The Security Forces recovered five locally-made guns and one shotgun from the Naputtivillu and Eliyaweddiweli areas of Batticaloa District.

September 29: Police conducted a search operation in the Muttur area of Trincomalee District and recovered 528 rounds of T-56 ammunition and 13 T-56 magazines.

September 25: Police found 1350 anti-personnel mines, 1350 mine fuses and 56 kilograms of C-4 explosive from the Narakamulla area of Batticaloa District.

September 23: Police conducting search and clear operations in the Narakamulla area of Batticaloa District recovered 91 T-56 weapons and 10 Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers.

In the Batticaloa town area the Police unearthed three claymore mines, twenty-five 122-mm artillery shells, eight 60-mm mortar bombs, four 152-mm artillery shells and four exploders while they had been buried in the Municipal Council vehicle park.

September 21: Troops in the East conducted search and clear operations on the same day and recovered two RPG bombs, two hand grenades, two 40-mm grenades, 80 rounds of MPMG ammunition, 42 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one T-56 magazine and two T-56 weapons from the general areas of Pondukalchenai, Irukkuweddi, Kalkudah, Thirukkovil and Kappukulam.

September 17: Air Force troops found one hand grenade from the Koviladi area of Trincomalee.

September 15: The troops in Batticaloa found three VCD players, one cash counter machine, one electric calculator, one electric drilling machine, three hand drills, one iron cutting saw, two electric hand saws, two toolkits, one LTTE flag, one Global Positioning System and 300 LTTE books from the Narakamulla area.

September 14: Army troops operating in the Batticaloa District conducted search operations in the Taravikulam area on a tip-off and found 4000 electric detonators, four cases containing C-4 explosives and 2250 rounds of T-56 ammunition.

September 13: Navy troops in the Trincomalee District conducted search operations on a tip-off and recovered three hand grenades from the Ambawelipuram and Noornagar areas.

September 12: The SFs found 60 rounds of 7.62x39-mm ammunition, two RPG chargers, seven RPGs, one pressure mine, 25 kilograms pack of TNT explosives, five hand grenades, two APMs, 122 APM fuses, one Electronic detonator and six detonator cords buried in the Periyawadduwan area of Trincomalee District.

A Sri Lanka Navy intelligence team acting on information received recovered a large stash of the LTTE documents from the Illangathurai area of Kadiraweli. The documents, bound into 25 parcels and wrapped in polythene bags, were found buried at the location. The Navy said the preliminary investigations have revealed these documents are of highly secretive nature relating to LTTE activities.

September 8: The Special Task Force personnel recovered two claymore mines, one 120-mm mortar bomb, two anti-personnel mines and one detonator during a search operation in the Leviniyaru area of Batticaloa District.

During a search in the Neboda area of Kalutara District the Special Task Force recovered one 40-mm Grenade Launcher.

September 6: Six anti-personnel mines, 1108 rounds of T-56 ammunition, four feet of detonator cords, eleven 60-mm mortar bombs, four hand grenades, three T-56 weapons and four T-56 magazines were recovered by the Special Task Force troops from the Kambiaru area in Ampara and Karadiyanaru area in Batticaloa Districts.

September 4: A landmine weighing about 20 kilograms, three T-56 weapons, four T-56 magazines and 117 rounds of T-56 ammunition were recovered by the Police from the Eravur area of Batticaloa District.

September 2: Troops serving in the Kaluwankerni area of Batticaloa District recovered 36 APMs, 60 APM fuses, five improvised explosive devices, four claymore mines, two remote controllers, two pressure mines, ten Rocket Propelled Grenades, two T-56 weapons, six T-56 magazines, 60 rounds of T-56 ammunition, three electric detonators, two kilograms of TNT explosives and 5 metre length of a detonator cord.

Police recovered one hand grenade from the Muttur area of Trincomalee District.

August 31: Air Force troops recovered five anti-personnel mines from the Kandalkadu area of Trincomalee District.

August 28: One hand grenade, eight 82-mm mortar bombs, forty-two 82-mm mortar fuses were recovered by the Police during a search operation in the Theravattakulam and Periyawadduwan areas of Trincomalee District.

August 27: Uppuveli Police in the Trincomalee District on information conducted a search in the area and recovered one claymore mine.

August 25: The STF personnel serving at Thirimunai in the Kalmunai area of Ampara District encountered an isolated group of LTTE militants and killed two of them. During subsequent search in the lagoon area where the incident occurred, the STF found the dead bodies of the slain militants along with one T - 56 weapon, one magazine and 25 rounds of ammunition.

August 23: Police conducted search operations in the Kondankarni and Kurawankarni areas of Valaichchenai area in the Batticaloa District and recovered one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine, 30 rounds of T-56 ammunition and one hand grenade.

August 20: Troops operating in the East found two T-56 weapons, four T-56 magazines, 126 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one hand grenade, thirty-five 82-mm mortar bombs, two 81-mm mortar bombs and eight 60-mm mortar bombs from the Welikanda, Periyawadduwan, Iralakkulam and Kolyanadu areas.

August 12: The Eravur Police recovered one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine, 27 rounds T-56 ammunition and two I-com sets from the Gorakalli Madu area.

August 11: Unidentified assailants shot dead a Muslim armed group leader, identified as Abdul Samath, in the Eravur area of Batticaloa District in the night of August 11, the Police said. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara, the victim, who was also the chairman of the fisheries association in the area, was shot dead at his residence at about 10:30pm (SLST). It was reported that he had handed over several illegal weapons to the Police few weeks ago during the special amnesty granted by the Sri Lanka Government.

Troops recovered four hand grenades, two kilograms of explosives, one T-56 weapon, four shotguns and four shotgun cartridges from the Peraru area of Trincomalee and Kahawaththamunei, Alanchipatana, Iluppuwedei areas of Batticaloa District.

During another search operation, the Special Task Force troops recovered one hundred and thirteen 120-mm mortar bombs form the Tharavikulam area in Batticaloa District.

August 10: Police conducted search operations in the Muthur and Eravur areas to recover one 81-mm mortar bomb and two hand grenades.

August 7: The Special Task Force personnel in the Batticaloa District on a tip-off conducted a search and clear operation in the Tharavikulam area and recovered two cans containing 55 kilograms of C-4 explosives.

August 6: The Security Forces recovered 25 anti-personnel mines (APM), 57 APM fuses and two claymore mines during search operation conducted in the Iralakulam and Navakkerni areas of Batticaloa District.

August 5: Troops recovered 14 T-56 weapons, one sniper gun, three claymore mines, 28 T-56 magazines, four sniper weapon magazines, two I-com station sets and two car cassettes from the Ethulakulam area of Batticaloa District.

Police in Batticaloa conducted a search operation at Narakamulla in the Thoppigala area and recovered INR 1.5 million worth money, two gold rings, two gold ear rings, one gold bangle and one gold chain kept hidden in the area by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants.

August 3: Members of the TMVP Party who had weapons in their possession before they entered into mainstream politics handed over a stock of arms and ammunition to the Army troops at Kudumbimalai in the Thoppigala area of Batticaloa District. The stock handed over included one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) weapon, four RPG bombs, one Light Machine Gun (LMG) weapon, one LMG drum, one T-81 weapon, four T-81 magazines, two T-56 MK II weapons, 10 T-56 magazines, one T-56 MK I weapon and 220 rounds of T-56 ammunition.

August 1: During a search and clear operation in the Nallathoniodai area of Ampara District, the troops recovered one T-56 weapon with a magazine, two rounds of T-56 ammunition, one I-com set, one micro phone, one antenna, one map, one Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) flag, one LTTE T-shirt, one pair of trousers, one cap, one LTTE belt order, one pouch, one LTTE Identity Card, 59 code sheets, 53 note books, five LTTE magazines, one LTTE news paper, 13 audio cassettes, 115 video tapes, one Panasonic remote controller, one pistol magazine pouch and six dog tags.

Troops in the Batticaloa District conducted search and clear operations in the Thallathonnimadu, Mawaliaru and Aralaganvila areas and recovered one T-56 weapon, one AK-47 weapon, seven AK-47 magazines, one Global Positioning System (GPS), two LTTE belt orders, 19 81-mm mortar bombs, 16 81-mm mortar fuses, 10 81-mm mortar chargers, 12 anti-personnel mines (APMs), 15 APM fuses, one claymore mine, five hand grenades, 1755 rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, one Arul bomb, 121 Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), 53 founds of 7.62x39-mm ammunition, 20 40-mm grenades, one I-com set and 227 82-mm mortar bombs.

The Police in a search operation conducted in the Wattuwan area of Trincomalee District recovered one T-56 weapon, three T-56 magazines and 34 rounds of T-56 ammunition.

Naval troops conducted a search and clear operation in Thonythattamadu area of Trincomalee District and recovered 15 I-com sets, three base station sets, one telephone, 12 1077 type hand-held communication sets, three mikes, one multi-meter, one GPS and one vehicle mounted antenna.

July 31: The Sri Lanka Police announced that except the Security Forces and Police, no other party will be allowed to carry weapons in the Eastern Province. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in the East, Edison Gunathilaka, said several main Tamil political parties who bore weapons in the past are also not allowed to carry weapons any more. According to the new rule, the political parties Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal, Ealam People's Democratic Party, People's Liberation Organization of Tamil, Ealam People's Revolution Liberation Front are also not allowed to hold weapons. Following the conclusion of the earlier announced amnesty period the Police have reportedly commenced raids to arrest people who continue to possess weapons.

July 30: The STF troops in the Tharavikulam area of Thoppigala in Batticaloa District recovered two hundred and twenty-seven 82-mm mortar bombs and 121 Rocket Propelled Grenades bombs.

July 29: Five hand grenades were recovered by the Security Forces during a search operation conducted in the Uppuveli area of Trincomalee District.

July 28: Troops recovered five anti-personnel mines and three 40-mm mortar bombs from the Kajuwaththa area in Batticaloa District.

July 26: Army troops in the east conducted search and clear operations in the Kalkuda and Mullivadduwan areas of Batticaloa District and Dimbulagala area of Polonnaruwa District and recovered seven rounds of 130-mm artillery shells, five rounds of 122-mm artillery shells, thirty-seven 81-mm mortar bombs, thirty-four 60-mm mortar bombs, three Rocket Propelled Grenades, rounds, ninety-two 40-mm grenade launcher ammunition, 170 rounds of T-56 ammunition, 127 MPMG ammunition, 214 rounds of 12.7 ammunition, five hand grenades and one 40-mm grenade launcher.

The Sri Lanka Air Force troops found two hand grenades from the Tissapura area of Kanthale in the Trincomalee District.

July 24: The SFs recovered one 120-mm mortar gun belonging to the LTTE from the Tharavikulam area of Thoppigala in the Batticaloa District. The complete 120 mm gun with all its accessories was found buried in the jungle area. This is the sixth heavy weapon of this caliber found by the troops in Eastern Province since January 1, 2009, the report added.

A few hours after the recovery of the 120-mm mortar gun, the SFs found a 12.7-mm anti-aircraft gun with nine round of ammunition from Thivuchena area. In both instances troops acted on intelligence given by some informants who were aware of the locations of those guns which had been kept buried by the LTTE militants for any future use, the report added.

July 22: At least two people were injured in a hand grenade attack at a liquor store in the Akkaraipaththu area of Batticaloa District in the night of July 22. Akkaraipaththu Police said an unidentified group lobbed two hand grenades at the liquor store.

July 21: Although the amnesty period announced by the Sri Lankan Government to hand over illegal weapons expired a few weeks ago, more armed factions handed over their weapons to authorities on July 21. An armed Muslim group in Eravur in the Batticaloa District is reported to have handed over their illegal weapons to the chief priest of the mosque at Michchinagar in the morning. The weapons were subsequently handed over to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in the area by the chief priest. Seven guns and several hand grenades were among the weapons that had been surrendered, the Police said. An amnesty period to hand over the illegal weapons in the Eastern Province announced by the Sri Lankan Government ended on July 4. There are reportedly 18 armed groups in the Eastern Province with nearly 400 firearms in their possession.

July 20: The Security Forces in the Kovilgama area of Trincomalee District and Thonitottamadu in the Batticaloa District found two hand grenades, photo copy of 90 area maps, 62 anti-personnel mines with 62 fuses, 21 compact disks and one digital tape.

An unidentified group attacked the house of a Pradeshiya Sabha (Local Administrative Council) member (from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress) of Valaichchenai in Batticaloa District. The Police said one was injured in the grenade attack on the house which was badly damaged.

July 17: Sri Lanka Police arrested a former LTTE Batticaloa District leader at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. According to the Police, the militant, identified as Saundaraja Mangala Prabha, was arrested when he arrived in the country from Dubai. The Police found several maps of Colombo city and photographs of the slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran in his travelling bag. Prabha reportedly had left the country in 2006 after receiving military training from the outfit. He was handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Department for further investigations.

July 16: The Sri Lankan Police arrested three LTTE supporters at Serunuwara in the Trincomalee District when they were distributing propaganda materials, the police said.

July 15: Troops operating in the Kudumbimalai area of Batticaloa and Kinniya area of Trincomalee Districts recovered two T-56 weapons, four T-56 magazines, 110 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one 7.5 kilograms claymore mine and 11 anti-personnel mines.

July 12: Troops in Batticaloa District recovered one hand grenade and 20 rounds of T- 56 ammunition during a search operation conducted in the Ottamavadi area.

July 10: During a search and clear operation in the Angodavillu area of Batticaloa District, Army troops recovered one 120-mm mortar launcher sans sight, one aiming picket and one toolkit. The weapon and accessories found had been wrapped in polythene and buried under soil.

200 kilograms of C-4 explosives, 2250 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, 150 shotgun cartridges and two suicide kits were recovered from the Awaddiweli area.

The Security Forces found one sniper telescope, 225 rounds of M-16 ammunition, one M-16 magazine, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun link, three LTTE combat kits, two T-56 weapons, seven T-56 magazines, 170 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one improvised explosive device, one claymore stand, one claymore mine, seven claymore chargers, 140 APMs, 139 APM fuses, 25 cyanide capsules, one pouch and six 82-mm mortar fuses from the Kanchikudichchiaru area of Ampara District.

July 9: Troops conducting search and clear operations in the Mahindapura area of Trincomalee District found two anti-personnel mines and one Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb.

July 6: The Batticaloa Police found two claymore mines of 10 kilograms each, one pressure mine of 10 kilograms, one charger and one wire roll on information given by a former LTTE suspect in Police custody.

The Kinniya Police found one Jonny mine, one detonator, two T-56 magazines29 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one kilogram of less powerful explosives, some parts of T-56 weapons, one data cable, two water bottles and four area maps from Menkamam in the Muttur tank area of Trincomalee District.

July 4: In response to the Government’s appeal, Islamic militants surrendered their weapons to the Police in the evening of July 4 at a ceremony held at Meera Jumma Mosque in the Kattankudi area of Batticaloa District. The weapons included 16 T-56 weapons, four 303 rifles, one shotgun, one 84-S weapon, one 9-mm pistol, one SMG KR weapon, five Galkatas weapons, 16 hand grenades, 1076 rounds of 7.62 x 39-mm ammunition, one hundred and six rounds of 303 rifles ammunition, 19 rounds of 84-S ammunition, 19 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, six rounds of 38-mm ammunition, two rounds of bore-12 ammunition, 25 T-56 magazines, five 303 rifles magazines, two 9-mm magazines and parts of a bore-12 weapon. The former militants surrendered their weapons through the Association of Muslim Mosques, the military said on July 5, The Hindu adds. The period granted for armed groups in the Eastern Province to hand over their weapons ended at 3:00pm on July 4.

Receiving the weapons, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Province) Edison Gunatilake described the event as "historic" and called for the surrender of all such weapons. Quoting Gunathilake, the English weekly Lakbima said a joint military operation would be launched to track down arms and ammunition in the hands of the "jihadist groups in the East, after the extended deadline given for the hand over of the weapons lapsed". It quoted Gunathilake as saying the response from the Muslim armed groups to the Government’s call to hand over weapons was poor. The weekly further quoted him as saying that intelligence reports reveal Islamist militants possess 250 T-56 assault rifles, a fraction of which had been handed over on July 4. 18 armed groups have been identified in the Eastern Province and these groups are reported to be holding more than 400 firearms.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Province Minister of Health, M. L. A. M. Hisbullah, said he distributed 600 weapons to villagers to be used to defend the Muslims from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He said he received them from the late President R. Premadasa and distributed them a day after an incident of massacre in Kathankudy in August 1990. "We never kept these weapons to fight the security forces. We used them to fight against the Tamil Tigers." The State run weekly Sunday Observer quoted Hisbullah as saying that Muslims did not need a separate political party but should remain part of the mainstream political parties to achieve their political aspirations and legitimate rights. He also denied recent reports about the presence of a Islamist militant movement in the Eastern Province.

July 2: Troops recovered one T-56 weapon, six T-56 magazines, 180 T-56 ammunition, 10 anti personnel mines, six anti personnel mine fuses, five electric detonators, 2 kilograms of C-4 explosives, one remote control device, one box filled with ball bearings, three pouches from the Soruwila area on Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa border.

Troops also recovered 5.5 kilograms of C-4 explosives and six feet long twenty Bangalore torpedoes buried in Verugal Island area Vakarai around 1.30 p.m. (SST).

A group of 1000 IDPs returned to their original homes in Ampara District after seven years. This is the first Government-organized return movement in the District in seven years. Originally hailing from two areas in the Thirukkovil division in Ampara, these IDPs were on the move since 1990 due to the conflict, until they returned to their villages following the 2002 cease-fire. However, they were once again displaced by the escalation in violence in the East in 2006 and have since been staying with friends and relatives in areas nearby, the UNHCR said.

July 1: Unidentified militants abducted a Tamil youth, identified as Ravichandran Sathees (18), travelling in a three-wheeler from Chengaladi road in Batticaloa.

Militants wearing Sri Lanka Army uniform abducted a Tamil youth, Subramaniam Sahathevan (19), from his house at Koapaaveli in Batticaloa. The relatives later lodged complaints with ICRC and Human Rights Commission in Batticaloa.

Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry extended the deadline given to Muslim militant outfits in the East to surrender their weapons to the SFs, by two more days on July 4. The deadline issued earlier was to expire on July 2. The deadline has been extended following requests made by the concerned parties, Police sources said. Police said a special committee has been formed to accept firearms and other weapons from these Muslim armed groups within the stipulated period. These groups could surrender their weapons to this committee through Mosque Federations in the area before 3 p.m. (SST) on July 4, the Eastern Regional Deputy Inspector General of Police, Edison Gunatilake, said in Batticaloa. According to a Police report, there are 18 Muslim militant outfits in Kaaththankudi area alone, in Batticaloa District.

June 29: Police personnel recovered four T-56 weapons, one Light Machine Gun and one G3 weapon in the Konduvalchenai area of Batticaloa.

July 28: The Eravur Police recovered five Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bombs, five 60-mm mortar bombs, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) barrel and one T 81 weapon in the Magalankerni area of Batticaloa.

Troops recovered one pressure mine, one T-56 weapon, two T-56 magazines, 62 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one pouch, seven anti-personnel mines, 15 hand grenades, 28 Arul bombs, five 60-mm mortar bombs, four 82-mm mortar bombs and four claymore devices from the Thalavai, Palauththuchenai and Kurumanveli areas of Batticaloa District.

June 20: Sri Lanka Air Force troops operating in the Morawewa and Kadawana areas of Trincomalee  District recovered 46 explosive chargers, one suicide jacket, 10 detonators, 70 kilograms of TNT explosives, 393 T-56 ammunition, three T-56 magazines and three T-81 magazines.

June 19: Air Force troops engaged in a search operation in the same area  recovered  16 C-4 explosive chargers weighing about 15 kilograms, two suicide jackets weighing about 2.5 kilograms each, 15m detonator code, six hand grenades, 15 kilograms of TNT explosives and 1500 rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition.  

70 more MPMG rounds of ammunition, one 81-mm mortar sight and a video camera tripod were recovered by troops during search and clear operations in the north of Vakarai in Batticaloa District on June 20. Further, the Army troops engaged in a search operation in the Angodavilluwa area of the same District recovered one 120-mm mortar hidden by the LTTE militants.

June 18: The Batticaloa District Police engaged in search and clear operations recovered 101 T-56 weapons, five 60-mm mortar launchers and three commando mortar launchers in Thonikattamadu, Vakarai on June 18, according to Sri Lanka Army report.

Navy troops in the Trincomalee District conducted a search operation in the Vellathoddam area and recovered 512 81-mm mortars, 192 81-mm mortar cartridges, 24 RPG rounds, 24RPG charges, four belt orders and 100 pouches on the same day. In the meantime, Army troops also recovered one shot gun during a search operation at Mailanpiddi in the Trincomalee District on June 18.

June 17: Troops recovered two T-56 weapons, one kilogram of TNT explosives, 444 rounds of T-56 ammunition, five Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), five hand grenades and one T-56 magazines during the searches following information received from civilians operating in the general areas of Iyankerni and Kalkudah in Batticaloa District 

Police in a similar search operation at Kinniya in Trincomalee District recovered one T-56 weapon, 30 rounds of T-56 ammunition and one hand grenade.      

June 14: Troops of the STF in a search operation recovered one commando mortar, two kilograms of C-4 explosives, two detonators, two detonator cords of 12 cm in length, 10 anti-personnel mines, seven anti-personnel mine fuses, five hand grenades, 20-feet long red coloured detonator cord, two ammunition pouches, one grenade pouch and one rifle sling in the general area of Wippitaweli in Batticaloa District.

Troops recovered a massive stock of T-56 ammunition buried in Thonnithottamadu area in Batticaloa District. Around 150,000 rounds of T-56 ammunitions were inside their original boxes which had been buried safely under the soil in the area. On the same day, STF during a search and clear operation in  Narakamulla and Illuppadichenai areas found one commando mortar gun, two claymore mines weighing about 2 kilograms each, a 20 feet long safety code, seven anti personnel mines, two anti personnel fuses, four hand grenades, two ammunition pouches, one hand grenade pouch and one riffle sling.  

June 11: Troops recovered two T-56 weapons, two T-56 magazines, 59 T-56 ammunition and two anti-personnel mines from Maligavila and Buttala in East.

June 10: Troops during extensive search operations in Murusimude and Pooneryn areas of Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts recovered arms and ammunitions. Troops also conducted search operation in Rugam of Ampara District on June 10. All those recoveries included one T-56 weapon, one T-56 magazine, one micro pistol, two 9 mm pistols, one booby trap, two claymore mines, one T-56 weapon, two T-56 magazines, 60 T-56 ammunition rounds, eighteen anti personnel mines and dry rations worth about SNR 150000.

June 7: Troops during a search operation  in the East recovered two T-56 weapons, five magazines, 161 rounds of T-56 ammunition, four detonators and one one-foot long detonator code in Kiran and Arapattai in Batticaloa District.

June 6: Troops operating in the Inkiriyamadu area of Batticaloa District recovered one land mine, three claymore mines, 140 pen torch batteries and 28 torch batteries.

June 5: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior member of the TMVP party at Ariyampathy in Batticaloa District. The gunmen shot him at his residence at Pudur. Police confirmed that the victim, identified as Ramalingam Jeayakumar, is a leader of TMVP in the Ariyampathy area.

June 4: SFs on search and clear operations recovered four claymore mines, one electric detonator, three T-56 weapons, 21 T-56 magazines, seven anti-personnel mines, 10 detonator codes, 1800 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one Bangalore torpedo, two claymore mine chargers, one detonator code of 50m, forty-six 82-mm mortar chargers, eight 82-mm mortar fuses, five LTTE maps, two LTTE gas bombs, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG), three MPMG links, 450 rounds of MPMG ammunition, six 40-mm grenade launcher cartridges, one MPMG belt order from the Manichchathuduwa and Navaladi areas of Batticaloa and Hulannuge, Higuregoda, Ganamunalgoda and Bakmitiyawa areas of Ampara District.

One claymore mine, five detonators, 130 of 9-mm ammunition, 198 rounds of T-56 ammunition and a three metre long detonator code were recovered by Air Force troops from the Mindencove area in Trincomalee District.

June 3: Troops recovered 750 7.6 x 39 ammunition, two land mines of 15 kilograms each, one T-56 weapon, three magazines, seventy five T-56 ammunition, one hand grenade, three anti personnel mines with fuses, one claymore mine of 5 kilogra, seven wire rolls, one field dressing, 15 7.62x39 ammunition,   eight rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition and two electric saws from the general areas of Unnachchi, Nainakadu in Trincomalee and Kompanachchena in Batticaloa.

Troops found seven hundred and fifty 7.6 x 39 ammunition, two land mines of 15 kilograms each, one T-56 weapon, three magazines, 75 T-56 ammunition, one hand grenade, three anti-personnel mines with fuses, one claymore mine of five kilograms, seven wire rolls, one field dressing, fifteen 7.62x39 ammunition, eight rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun ammunition and two electric saws from Unnachchi and Nainakadu areas of Trincomalee District and Kompanachchena in Batticaloa District.

June 2: Troops conducting search operations in the Pattialpuram and Puchene areas found 20 hand grenades, 109 T-56 ammunition rounds, 50 boxes of 7.62 ammunition, 16 kilograms of explosives, six RPG rounds and eight RPG chargers.

May 31: Police conducted search and clear operations in the Vakarai and Puttur areas of Batticaloa on District and recovered one T-56 weapon, one magazine, 30 rounds of T-56 ammunition and 776 rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Guns ammunition.

May 30: Police conducted search and clear operations in the Uppuveli area of Trincomalee District and Karakallimadu area of Batticaloa District and recovered two landmines weighing approximately 15 kilograms each, one landmine, eighteen 60-mm mortar bombs, one hand-held radio set, one claymore mine weighing about 1.5 kilograms and two Rocket Propelled Grenade bombs.

The LTTE team leader of Trincomalee south, Shanker, surrendered to the Army at Kallar. Later, he was handed over to the Police for further investigations.

May 28: The Army arrested three LTTE suspects along with arms and ammunition and handed them over to the Police in the Vakarai area of Batticaloa District on May 28, according to a Sri Lanka Army report. The three suspects from Valaichchenai area, identified as K.P. Amarasinghe alias Puwalendi, 30, P. Samuel alias Yogan, 40, and S. Sivanathan alias Rahula, 35, were arrested along with three T56 magazines, 210 T-56 ammunition, eight magazines, a pistol with eight rounds, a pistol magazine, a claymore mine, a remote control device, a wire roll, two hand grenades, four anti-personnel mines, three fuses, three detonators, two cyanide capsules, a jack, two belt order and bandages.

May 27: 11 LTTE militants were killed by the troops in the Kalavanchikudi area of Batticaloa District. Subsequently the troops recovered dead bodies of all the 11 slain militants along with five T-56 weapons, 20 claymore mines weighing about 15 kilograms each, two hand grenades, three anti-personnel mines and a stock of medical items from the area.

May 26: During search operations in the Karativu and Aliyaodi areas of Ampara District, the SFs recovered 2000 electric detonators and 47 hand grenades.

May 23: Police personnel on search operation recovered one T-56 weapon, four magazines, 127rounds of T-56 ammunition, 15 detonators, two detonator codes, two APM, five APM fuses, two remote controller units with two batteries, two cyanide capsules, three hand grenades, two claymore chargers, one claymore circuit and one dog tag from the Kinniya area in the Nagautthu region of Trincomalee District.

May 21: Four hand grenades, four anti-personnel mines and 17 rounds of T-56 ammunition were found by the troops in the Sampur area of Trincomalee District.

SFs shot dead five LTTE militants in the Periyapillumalai area of Batticaloa District. Subsequently, the SFs recovered dead bodies of the five slain militants along with two T-56 weapons, one hand grenade, 11 anti personnel mines, six ammunition magazines, two improvised explosive devices, two mobile phones and one belt order.

Army troops on patrol in the Kanchikudichchiaru area of Ampara District shot dead three militants and later recovered three T-56 weapons, three hand grenades, two claymore mines, detonator code and a medical pack along with the dead bodies of the slain militants from the incident site.

May 15: Troops on search and clear operations in the Mailambaweli area of Batticaloa District recovered 29 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, one SFG type hand grenade, one cyanide capsule and one Army-type uniform following information provided by two suspects arrested by the SFs.

May 13: Police personnel on duty in Batticaloa arrested three suspected LTTE militants along with one 9-mm pistol, eight ammunition, three T-56 magazines, 80 T-56 ammunition and one pouch.

May 10: The STF personnel recovered a cache of arms, including 82,550 T56 rounds of ammunition, hidden inside a LTTE weapon storage bunker in the Govipalaru area of Ampara District. The STF recovered 82,550 T56 ammunition, 1,093 anti personnel mines (APMs), 74 APM fuses, 10 vehicle bombs each weighing 15 kilograms, a Multi Purpose Machine Gun barrel, 150 metres detonator chord, 600 metres wire and a mine stand. May 4: The STF personnel in Komari and Pothuvil areas of Ampara District foiled a LTTE infiltration bid, killing four militants.

May 3: Troops conducting security surveillance in the east found 500 grenades from the Thihilaveddi area of Batticaloa District.

May 2: Troopers from the Karativu STF camp conducted a search in the Karakadapalliya area and recovered one pistol, 60 rounds of ammunition and two hand grenades.

Troops during a search and clear operation in the Puttur area found sixty 81-mm mortar bombs.

April 30: Suspected LTTE militants shot dead a civilian in the Kaluwankerny area of Batticaloa District.

April 28: Troops on search operations in the Kovilporativu area of Batticaloa District arrested three suspects carrying one T-56 weapon, 22 rounds of ammunition, one magazine, one mobile phone, two SIM cards and two National Identity Cards.

April 25: Suspected LTTE militants carried out two attacks at Nochchikulam in the Morawewa area of Trincomalee District and Panama in the Pothuvil village of Ampara District, killing nine civilians.

Troops in the Palamattalam, Puthukkudiyiruppu west and Puthukkulam areas recovered 33 hand grenades and one Mitsubishi Pajero jeep.

STF personnel recovered one claymore mine, 156 metre-long explosive dead cord and four electric detonators from the Samanthurai area of Ampara District.

April 18: One T-56 weapon and three magazines were recovered by the troops from the Kudumbimalai are of Batticaloa District.

April 5: Superintendent of Police H.L. Jamaldeen was shot dead by suspected LTTE militants at Marathamunai in the Kalmunai area of Ampara District. Jamaldeen, who was the Deputy Director at the Kallady Police Training School in Batticaloa, was killed while he was returning after evening prayers at the Marathamunai mosque.

Troops engaged in search and clear operations in the Kadiraveli area of Batticaloa District recovered one micro pistol, one magazine containing six rounds of ammunition, eight 81-mm mortar bombs, fourteen 81-mm chargers, six 60-mm mortar Para bombs and two hand grenades from the area.

April 3: 13 LTTE militants, including an explosive expert, were killed when Police commandos of the STF ambushed them at Kongahahela in the Lahugala area of Ampara District. The STF said they recovered dead bodies of the slain militants, including two females, along with a large haul of weapons and explosives. The STF also said that they had identified the leader of the unit who was killed during the attack as Kandaiah Sarawanandam alias Paramanadam Master, believed to be an explosives expert and an area leader of the LTTE. Paramanandam Master, hailing from Malwatte in Ampara, had joined the LTTE in 1995 and is believed to be the mastermind of several bomb attacks and a spate of civilian killings carried out in the area recently.

April 1: Police personnel attached to the Valaichchenai Police Station conducted a search operation in the Vinayagapuram area of Batticaloa District and recovered one claymore mine of five kilograms and one hand grenade.

March 31: Two more suspects charged with the abduction and killing of a six-year-old girl, Warsha Jude, in Trincomalee on March 11 were shot dead by the LTTE militants in Trincomalee. Police said that when they opened fire at a suspected group of militants, the two murder suspects were caught in the crossfire and were killed. During the encounter, two Policemen were also injured. However, it is not yet clear how the murder suspects got involved in the crossfire with the militants. Earlier, the Police shot dead the main suspect in connection with the abduction and killing of Warsha in an escape attempt from Police custody while another suspect committed suicide by taking a cyanide capsule. Warsha was abducted from her school and later killed when a ransom demand of SLR 30 million was not met.

March 30: Airmen of the Sri Lanka Air Force during a search operation in the Surangal area of Trincomalee District found one 60-mm mortar bomb, one kilogram of P3A explosives, a detonator code and a detonator.

March 26: Two TMVP members were killed as a local office of the party at Annamalai in the Ampara District was attacked, parts officials said. An unnamed TMVP spokesman blamed the attack on the LTTE.

The Army and Police arrested two LTTE militants, reportedly involved in the killing of four farmers in the Welikanda area of Polonnaruwa District from the Uppuaweli area of Trincomalee District along with a stock of military items in their possession. Police believes the same group is responsible for killing of five farmers and injuring another two on March 24 in a similar attack at Dehiwatte village in the Serunuwara area of Trincomalee District.

March 25: The Akkaraipattu Police seized a 40-kg heavy claymore mine, 15 APMs, 204 APM fuses and 1456 T-56 ammunition rounds from a secret location at Aligambe in the Ampara District.

March 24: A road picket run by airmen of the Sri Lanka Air Force in Trincomalee came under an LTTE fire attack injuring one airman.

March 23: Three soldiers who were on route-clearing duties in the Bakmitiyawa area of Ampara District sustained injuries when a LTTE-laid landmine exploded at about 6.30am (SLST). The landmine is believed to have been kept buried by militants before they were driven away from the East in July 2007.

March 21: The STF engaged in a search operation in the Badamessawa area of Ampara District recovered one small generator hidden in the area. One STF personnel also sustained injuries in an anti-personnel mine explosion during the operation.

March 20: An unidentified assailant shot dead Saumyathamby, a coordinating officer to the Member of Parliament and former LTTE leader Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman, in the Vakanery area of Batticaloa District. According to Police, the assailant forcibly entered the victim's house and shot him dead. Saumyathamby was also the head of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party office in Vakanery.

March 18: A TMVP member who is suspected to be involved in the abduction and murder of a six-year-old girl in Trincomalee on March 11 reportedly committed suicide in the evening of March 18 by swallowing a cyanide capsule. Trincomalee Police confirmed the suspect committed suicide when he was taken to an area at Selvanayagampuram in Trincomalee to locate a place where the suspects have hidden a weapon used by them in earlier crimes. The suspect, identified as Janarthan alias Jana, who supported the TMVP in the last provincial election in East is known as the local leader of the TMVP political office at Orrshill in Trincomalee. The Eastern Chief Minister and TMVP leader, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, however, said in the morning of March 19 that Janarthan was not a member of his party but he had worked for the TMVP during the last election.

A LTTE militant was killed by the SFs in the Kannagipuram area of Ampara District. A cordon and search operation was conducted by the Army and Police in the area following information about the presence of suspected 'pistol gang' cadres of the LTTE in the area. During the operation, one of the militants in hiding fired a few rounds towards the troops injuring one of them. The SFs in retaliatory fire killed the unidentified militant.

March 17: The Sri Lanka Police uncovered details on the abduction group that killed a six-year-old-girl in Trincomalee on March 11. Trincomalee Police said the group was led by a senior cadre of the TMVP, the party led by the Chief Minister of Eastern Province, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan. According to Police, the group has killed three more people - a leading businessman, a manager of a movie theatre and a bus conductor - in Trincomalee demanding ransom. In addition, they have been involved in 30 kidnapping cases in Trincomalee. Police said three more TMVP activists are among the arrested in connection with the March 11 incident. Police arrested Janarthan, a TMVP leader in Trincomalee, Karan and Oswin Mervin Rinawushan, TMVP members, and Reginald, the son of a Woman Police Constable of Trincomalee, on March 15. The main suspect Rinawushan was killed by the Police during an escape attempt on March 16.

March 12: A State owned passenger bus bound for national capital Colombo from Kalmunai while proceeding along Navaladi junction in the Batticaloa District was set ablaze by unidentified gunmen after forcing passengers to disembark from the vehicle.

March 8: Troops recovered one claymore mine, five hand grenades, two detonators and five feet long wire from Kannagipuram area in Ampara.

March 7: Troops engaged in a search operation north of Mavil Aru in the Trincomalee District recovered one APM.

The TMVP symbolically handed over the arms that had been provided to its cadres for self-defence and security in the wake of the LTTE atrocities during a brief ceremony at the Weber stadium in Batticaloa. The Chief Minister of Eastern Province and leader of the TMVP, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, Batticaloa Mayor Sivageetha Prabaharan, senior Army and Police Officers and cadres of the TMVP were present on the occasion.

March 4: Troops recovered eight APMs, seven fuses, three claymore remote controllers with two antennas and one LTTE flag during search operations at Kanchkudichchiaru in the Ampara District.

March 3: An unidentified assailant shot dead Sellathurei Ranjith Kumar, the former driver of the Secretary to Eastern Chief Minister and TMVP leader Pillayan, in Batticaloa town.

March 2: Unidentified assailants attacked the vehicle of the media spokesman to the Member of Parliament and founder of the TMVP, Vinayagamoorthy Muraleetharan alias Karuna Amman, who recently left the TMVP, at Batticaloa. Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara said the gunmen came on a motorbike and shot at the vehicle. The media spokesman escaped unhurt in the attack, but a teenager inside the vehicle was injured.

February 28: SFs at Akkaraipattu roadblock in the Ampara District conducted a search on a Sri Lanka Transport Service bus and found 7000 mobile pre-paid cards and 15 used mobile phones from the possession of a passenger.

February 27: The Special Task Force recovered two T-56 assault rifles, one 12.7 anti-aircraft ammunition, one claymore mine, 760 nine rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun ammunition, three rounds of Rocket Propeller Gun, three T-56 magazines and two TNT boosters from a jungle patch in the costal area of Athurukondan in the Batticaloa District.

The TMVP released another group of child soldiers who had been recruited for its activities. According to TMVP sources, the party released 250 child soldiers at a special function held in the Batticaloa District Secretariat, responding to an appeal by the United Nations Children's Fund.

February 25: During a search operation in the Valaichchenai area of Batticaloa District, troops recovered three 60-mm mortar bombs and one Rocket Propeller Grenade bomb.

February 24: A special Police team attached to the Trincomalee Police station acting on information on conducted a search in the Thoppigala jungles of Batticaloa District and recovered one anti aircraft missile concealed by the LTTE militants before they fled the area. The report said that it was a heat seeking type surface to air missile.

February 21-22: At least 12 civilians, including two children, were shot dead by the LTTE militants at Karawetiyagama in the Rathmalgahaella area of Ampara District. The militants stormed the village and opened indiscriminate fire at the villagers killing at least 12 of them while injuring some others, including two children. The death toll increased to 21, the Media Centre for National Security said on February 22.

February 19: An unidentified gang shot dead shot a supporter of the TMVP party in the Batticaloa District. The Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara said the identity of the victim is not known yet.

February 18: Special Task Force personnel during a search operation in the Unnachchiya area of Batticaloa District recovered one RPG launcher, three RPG rounds, three RPG chargers, one T-56 weapon, two magazines and 30 rounds of ammunition. Elsewhere, the SFs recovered two cyanide capsules, one telephone charger and four batteries from the Seruwila area.

During a search operation in the Sirnarayanpuram area of Trincomalee District, the SFs recovered one T-56 weapon, two magazines and 35 rounds of ammunition.

February 15: Police found an unattended parcel containing 1.5 kilograms of C-4 explosives from Trincomalee town area. During another search operation conducted in the Tissapura area, Police found one hand grenade.

During a search operation at Pottakulem in the Trincomalee District, the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel recovered 1050 anti-personal mines and 600 fuses.

February 13: The STF personnel shot dead two LTTE militants when the duo was trying to target the STF personnel on duty at Old Farm in the Lahugala area of Ampara District. The STF later recovered two T-56 weapons, two magazines with 25 ammunition rounds, three hand grenades, one Global Positioning System and a cyanide capsule.

The SFs killed two militants in the Inguruhinna area of Batticaloa District and later also recovered one Multi Purpose Machine Gun, one 40-mm grenade launcher, five T-56 weapons, four bags and one hand grenade from the area.

During a search operation conducted in the Kumpanachchi area of Batticaloa District, the SFs recovered two hand tractors, one motorbike, one assault rifle with one magazine, six rounds of ammunition, one shot gun with a cartridge and one 35 litre can.

February 10: Troops conducted search operations in Tissapura, Kudavilachcholai and Kadiraweli areas of Trincomalee District and recovered one disposable Rocket Propeller Gun from Tissapura, one weapon similar to 40-mm grenade launcher from Kudavilachcholai and one claymore mine weighing about five kilograms, one hand grenade, one claymore mine stand, one 9-m long detonator code and one hand held communication set from the Kadiraweli area.

In a similar search operation, troops recovered a hand grenade from the Batticaloa town.

February 9: Militants triggered a pressure mine explosion targeting a team of STF members travelling on a tractor in the Onkanda area of Batticaloa District, killing two STF personnel.

A LTTE militant was killed when he attempted to shoot officials from the Kalawanchikudi STF camp in the Batticaloa District. The officials were conducting a search operation on a tip-off provided by an arrested militant identified as Udayakumar Kamalan, who had deserted LTTE ranks at Eruvil on February 6.

February 8: Police recovered two RPG rounds, two anti-personnel mines, 132 T-56 ammunition rounds and two hand grenades from the Almanagar area of Trincomalee District.

Police recovered one claymore mine weighing five kilograms, one military pack, one landmine booster charge and 500 Multi Purpose Machine Gun ammunition rounds from the Kadiraweli area of Batticaloa District.

February 2: Police recovered three 82-mm mortar bombs, three 60-mm mortar bombs, eight fuses, eight hand grenades, 130 rounds of ammunitions and 500 grams of gun powders from the Mankerni and Vakarai areas of Batticaloa District.

One hand grenade was found by the troops in the Kiran area.

The Trincomalee Police seized a truck used to transport LTTE suicide kits from the premises of a house which belongs to a high ranking Police officer in Trincomalee. According to the Trincomalee Police, the truck was seized on information revealed by the interrogation of two LTTE militants arrested earlier in Trincomalee. The truck was registered in the name of the wife of this high ranking officer, the Police said.

January 27: The Sri Lanka Police have instructed the farmers of Maligawila and its neighbouring villages in the Moneragala District near the border of Eastern Province, which recently came under attack by fleeing LTTE militants from North, to vacate their homes with immediate effect. According to Police sources, the villagers were instructed to vacate their homes due to failure to grant security for these villages following the recent attack. The sources confirmed that villagers in Kaluillama, Bosra, Kaju Ara and Demodara in Maligawila have begun to leave their houses obeying the Police order.

January 24: Police acting on a tip-off recovered five hand grenades and 146 rounds of T-56 ammunition from the Pushpangeadi area of Trincomalee District.

January 23: The TMVP leader and a Member of Parliament, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, said that the Government would put an end to the child soldiers' issue in the Eastern Province within the next three months under a joint agreement signed by the Government, UNICEF and the TMVP.

January 22: Police seized 23 kilograms of C4 explosives and a cache of arms while it was being transported to Colombo by a van passing several checkpoints. Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekera said, "The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) explosives van and arms and weapons recovered in Karadiyanarukulam, Batticaloa had been seized by police on information from an LTTE cadre who was arrested in Padukka who attempted to explode a bomb inside a bus in December. The suspect was arrested on information from a vigilant woman travelling in the same bus."

January 21: Two persons were killed and 10 others injured when a bomb fixed to a bicycle in front of the Batticaloa Police station exploded at around 7.30am. Among the killed were a Police Sergeant and one civilian while two Policemen and eight civilians sustained injuries.

The STF personnel clashed with a group of LTTE militants at Radella in the Pothuvil area of Batticaloa District. The STF personnel later recovered the dead body of one militant.

The STF personnel confronted a group of LTTE militants at Korankerny in the Thavasikulam area of Batticaloa District killing one militant.

A LTTE cadre, identified as Kulasekaram Puviraj, attempted suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule after the STF personnel attempted to arrest him in the Kalawanchikudi area.

January 20: Suspected LTTE militants shot at two civilians who went into the jungle area at Unnachchiya in the Batticaloa District, killing one of them while injuring another. Naval troops recovered one pistol, 20 rounds of .22 ammunition, 20 rounds of 9-mm ammunition and two micro cassettes during a search operation operating in the Illangathurai area of Trincomalee District.

January 18: During search operations in the Kirimichchiya and Vakaneri areas of Batticaloa District, the troops recovered two hand grenades, five anti-personnel mines and one pack.

January 17: Unidentified assailants shot dead three persons, including a civil defence force soldier, in the Muttur area of Trincomalee District. Police said the assailants killed the victims while they were travelling in a tractor. Two of the victims are believed to be farmers from the Muttur area.

Suspected LTTE militants shot at and injured the private secretary to the Eastern Chief Minister, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, at Sinnathurei in the Batticaloa District.

January 14: One STF trooper was killed and two others injured in a LTTE-triggered landmine explosion in the Panama area of Ampara District.

Troops recovered two T-56 magazines, one hand grenade, 15 T-56 rounds and three GPMG rounds from the Sridarpura area of Trincomalee District.

January 10: A group of LTTE militants stormed the TMVP office at Killiveddi in the Trincomalee District and opened fire at the TMVP members inside the office killing one of them and injuring two others. In the ensuing exchange of fire between the LTTE cadres and TMVP members providing security to the office, two militants were killed. Dead bodies of two LTTE militants along with one T-56 weapon, three hand grenades, one cyanide capsule, and mobile phone were recovered from the incident site.

An unidentified assailant killed a prominent Tamil businessman, identified as Thambirasa Ravindran, at Nawakkadu in the Batticaloa District, Police said.

January 8: Four civilians and three SLAF personnel were killed in a LTTE-triggered claymore mine explosion at Morawewa in the Trincomalee District. The explosion occurred when the SLAF personnel were engaged in route-clearing for a tractor of the Irrigation Department which was taking civilian workers to the Neluwa irrigational worksite, killing four civilians aboard the tractor and three accompanying SLAF personnel on the spot. Six more sustained injuries in the blast.

January 1: LTTE militants triggered a claymore mine explosion targeting personnel of the Police and Civil Defence Force (CDF) manning a Police post at Weerachcholai under Samanthurai Police Division in the Ampara District. One Police Constable and a CDF member were killed in the blast.

Troops deployed north of Meegasgodalla in the Trincomalee District attacked a group of LTTE militants and subsequently recovered forty-three detonator codes, one LTTE uniform and some food items from the incident site.

Naval troops operating in the Kalladi area recovered eight T-56 weapons, three GPS, one I-com set, eight I-com hand held pouches, two DVD players, one video camera and two cameras.

Police recovered a claymore mine weighing about one kilogram from the Thatrimale area.

2008

December 30: The LTTE militants detonated a claymore mine targeting an Army truck moving on the Kiran-Thoppigala road in the Mailawedduwan area of Batticaloa District.

The troops observed a LTTE militant in the Inyokern area of Trincomalee District and as they moved towards him, he committed suicide swallowing cyanide. Later, troops recovered one T-56 weapon with two magazines and 50 rounds of ammunition from his possession.

The troops recovered seven anti-personnel mines and one booby trap from the Poonagar area of Trincomalee District. Troops also recovered two hand grenades, one code sheet, one map, four batteries and some field dressings from the Arippu area. Separately, one improvised explosive device was recovered by the troops from Sinna Iynakerni area.

December 28: Army troops at Black Bridge in the Chenkaladi area of Batticaloa District confronted a group of LTTE militants and inflicted heavy casualties upon the militants. During subsequent search and clear operations, the troops recovered dead bodies of four militants along with two T-56 weapons and two micro pistols.

December 25: A claymore mine weighing approximately 1.5 kilograms was recovered by the Kokkadicholai Police near Mahalvitti bridge in the Batticaloa District.

December 24: Security Forces launched a massive cordon and search operation in the Batticaloa district to trace explosives, hidden weapons and the LTTE militants who had reportedly sought refuge in the District. Police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranjith Gunesekera, told Daily News that 860 houses and 124 vehicles were searched and 2,905 persons were questioned during the operation that lasted twelve hours. Six persons were arrested on suspicion.

December 20: Two soldiers were injured in a LTTE-triggered claymore mine attack on an Army foot patrol at Sittandy in the Devapura area of Batticaloa district.

December 17: Two soldiers were injured when an Army bunker at Singhethattamunai in the Vakarai area of Batticaloa District was attacked by the LTTE militants who used hand grenades.

Army troops in Trincomalee recovered a hand grenade from the 4th mile post area.

December 15: The Security Forces recovered one T-56 weapon, two magazines, 56 rounds of T-56 ammunition and one hand grenade at Sitthandy and Iyankerny in the Eravur area of Batticaloa District.

December 14: Military sources said that 21 LTTE militants led by Nagulan, a former LTTE leader in the East, has infiltrated the East with the objective of destabilising the security situation and four militants who had been killed by the troops in Bakmitiyawa in Ampara on December 8 belonged to that group. "We suspect that the two Tiger cadres killed in Kanchkudichchiaru yesterday were also from the same group," added unnamed sources.

December 13: Unidentified assailants riding on a motorcycle opened fire at civilians in the Ariampathi area of Batticaloa District killing a woman and injuring two persons, including a woman.

Two farmers working on their fields in the Samagipura area of Trincomalee District were shot at and injured by an unidentified gunman.

December 9: The TMVP reassured that they will disarm in the near future. The Eastern Province Chief Minister and the deputy leader of the party Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan a. k. a. Pillayan gave this assurance during a meeting with the Deputy British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Mark Gooding, in the morning of December 9. At the meeting, Pillayan is reported to have pointed out that they need some time to disarm.

December 8: Security Forces attacked a group of LTTE militants in the Bakmitiyawa jungles of Ampara district and killed four of them. Troops later recovered the dead bodies of the four militants along with four of their T-56 weapons.

December 7: A soldier serving at the Ondachchimadam roadblock in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district was injured when the roadblock was fired upon by a suspected LTTE militant.

December 8: Army Commando troops in the morning of attacked an isolated group of LTTE militants in the Bakmitiyawa jungles of Ampara district and killed four of them.

December 7: One soldier serving at the Ondachchimadam roadblock in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district was injured when the roadblock was fired upon by a suspected LTTE militant.

The Ministry of Resettlement and Rehabilitation said that the resettlement process in Trincomalee district has been completed.

December 4: The STF clashed with the LTTE militants at Unnachchiya in the Iththamale area of Batticaloa district and killed an unspecified number of militants. The STF later recovered the dead body of a LTTE militant. One STF trooper was also killed during the incident.

The TMVP represented by its leaders, Member of Parliament Vinayagamoorthy Muraleetharan a.k.a. Karuna, and his deputy Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan signed an agreement with the UNICEF to end its child recruitment. According to a UNICEF press release, the agreement would ensure the immediate release of all children currently with the TMVP.

December 3: The STF troops in Ampara district shot dead a LTTE militant at Rugama in the Pillumale area and recovered two hand grenades from his possession.

December 1: A provincial leader of the LTTE, Thangawel Krishnapillei alias Chuti, was shot dead by the Police at Eravur in the Batticaloa district. According to the Police, Chuti who was arrested by the Eravur Police few days ago and he was shot dead when tried to shoot the officers when they were searching for the weapons he had hidden in the Eravur area.

November 29: One civilian, identified as Illayathambi Kurukulasingham, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his residence in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district.

The SFs cordoned several areas in Batticaloa and conducted a combined search operation throughout the day time. Following intelligence information about presence of a few LTTE infiltrators, these combined cordon and search operations were conducted in Batticaloa, Eravur, Valaichchenai, Karadiyankadu, Vakarai, Aithiyamalai, Vavuvathivu, Kokkadicholai, Kaththankudy and Kalawanchikudi. Police questioned 11963 persons out of which 123 were detained for further inquiries. Three more suspects believed to have connections to the LTTE were also arrested during the search. The SFs conducted this special cordon and search operation in the wake of a series of murders and criminal acts including the most recent killing of the medical officer. At least 15 civilians have been killed in the last few days.

November 27: A Non Governmental Organization employee was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Batticaloa. Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara said that the victim, identified as A. Vigneswaran, worked for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Batticaloa.

Suspected LTTE militants shot dead a Hindu priest, Subramanium Kamalaraj, the chief priest of the Sri Sivamuttu Kali Amman Kovil (Temple), at Mamangama in Batticaloa.

One trooper was killed when troops clashed with a group of LTTE militants in the area south of Inguruhinna in the Thoppigala region of Batticaloa district. The militants, however, managed to escape.

Troops in Trincomalee recovered three hand grenades during a search conducted in the Pokurani area. Similarly, one claymore mine, weighing about seven kilograms, and a remote controller was recovered by the troops from the Palacholi area.

Troops in the Amman Nagar area of Muttur in the Trincomalee district recovered one Rocket Propeller Gun bomb, one T-56 weapon, three magazines, two hand grenades, six anti-personnel mines, six fuses, five 60-mm mortar bombs and six detonators.

November 26: Police said a family of mother, father, son and daughter were killed at Pillaiar Road in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district.

November 25: The STF personnel attacked a three-member LTTE group on in the Karaweddi area of Batticaloa district. The STF later recovered the dead bodies of all three militants.

Three LTTE cadres were shot dead by the security forces at Vavuvathivu in the Batticaloa district.

The LTTE militants detonated a claymore mine targeting two soldiers on a motorbike patrolling on the Kurumanveli jetty road in the Kalavanchchikudy area of Batticaloa district, about 19-kilometre south of Batticaloa town, killing them on the spot.

The STF killed two militants in an encounter at a location 329 and 330-km posts on the Urani-Komari road in the Ampara district. The STF later recovered the dead bodies of two militants along with two T-56 weapons, six magazines, two hand grenades and a few dry ration packets.

A retired Grama Sevaka (local village official), his mother and son were killed by unidentified assailants in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district. Meanwhile, another unidentified dead body was handed over to Kalawanchikudi hospital.

Another suspect who did not obey an order to stop near a STF checkpoint was also shot dead in the Eastern Province, police sources said.

BBC Sinhala reports that the campaign group, Human Rights Watch, has accused the TMVP of carrying out a wave of killings and abductions in the east of the country. The group said TMVP had been involved in about 30 murders and an equal number of kidnappings during September and October. Most of those abducted are reported to be children. Meanwhile, Health Minister of the eastern provincial council, M.L.A.M. Hisbullah, told BBC Sandeshaya that abductions and killings had decreased in the region.

November 22: Two Police officers were shot dead by unidentified militants at two different locations - at Eravur and Kalawanchikudi – in the Batticaloa district.

Police recovered two unidentified dead bodies of youths at Kalawanchikudi in the Batticaloa district.

November 17: The LTTE militants shot dead a Medical Officer and a civilian at about 10.00pm in the Vavuvathivu area of Batticaloa district.

November 15: The security forces on search and clear operations in Naval Headwork area of the Trincomalee district recovered one T-56 magazine, 30 ammunitions, one AMP, one I-com communication set, one CDMA phone and one poncho Cape.

November 13: Two TMVP members were shot dead at their TMVP office in the Pangudaweli area of Batticaloa district. The victims were identified as A. Arumugam and S. Gunasekaran. Around seven LTTE cadres carried out the attack and fled the area.

The Buddhist monk, Ven. Sivuralamulle Dhammasiri Thero, reportedly abducted from the historical Kudumbigala Temple in the Ampara district on November 12-night was found on November 13-morning. Police sources said the monk was found in the jungle of Okanda in Panama area by the Special Task Force troops in a search operation.

November 12: At Navatkadu in the Batticaloa district, the troops recovered one T-56 weapon, three magazines and 78 rounds of ammunition.

UNHCR said more than 1.5 lakh IDPs have returned to their former villages in the Eastern Province over the past year.

A Buddhist monk, Ven. Sivuralamulle Dhammasiri Thero, in the internationally famous Kudumbigala Temple in the Ampara district was abducted by unidentified persons, the police said. Police have provided security of two Home Guards for the monk as he has been threatened several times but the sources said at the time of the abduction the Home Guards were not present.

November 10: Two more cadres of the TMVP, identified as Palan Yogarasa from Nawakkadu and Jerad Rosaira from Iridiyapuram, were shot dead inside their party office in the Vavuvathivu area of Batticaloa district. Eight members had been present at the time of the incident. With this killing 15 TMVP cadres have so far been killed in the past two months.

November 9: Members of the Civil Defence Force recovered one T-56 weapon and a magazine from the Killiveddi area of Trincomalee district.

The security forces recovered one claymore mine, one hand grenade, 1.5kg of C4 explosives, five electric detonators and 7m of detonator code from the Akkaraipattu area of Ampara district.

November 8: One more cadre of the TMVP was shot dead bringing the total killed during the last two months to 13. Unidentified assailants shot dead the TMVP cadre, identified as Jeevaraj, and injured another person at their office at Vakarai in the Kadiraweli area of Batticaloa district. Almost all the cases remain unresolved, though the LTTE is accused for the killings. Yet the internal conflicts in the TMVP are also under investigation.

Naval troops conducting a special a search operation in the Kumburupiddy area of Trincomalee district recovered one T-56 weapon, three magazines, 31 round of ammunition, two anti-personnel mines, one claymore mine, five hand grenades, two hand held communication sets, one communication set cover, 8 meter antenna cable, 12 meter antenna wire, one phone charger, 29 pen torch batteries and three cyanide capsules.

November 7: Two Civil Defence Force (CDF) officers and a police constable were killed and another CDF officer injured when the LTTE cadres opened fire on them at Kohilaela in Tampitiya. They were attacked while providing security to farmers working in their paddy fields.

November 6: The LTTE militants lobbed a hand grenade targeting the STF in the Pothuvil area of Ampara district. However no casualty was reported.

The SFs recovered one camouflage T-shirt with a cap, one poncho cape, one Army cap badge and one civil kit from inside a house in the Kumburumulla area of Trincomalee district.

During another search operation conducted by the troops in the Kovilkudirippu area of Trincomalee district, the SFs recovered 27 anti-personnel mines, 26 fuses, one Rocket Propeller Grenade bomb and one 60-mm mortar bomb.

The STF troops recovered 11 hand grenades, 5-kg of C-4 explosive, five electric detonators, one improvised explosive device fixed to a motorcycle battery with 1kg of explosive, 20 fuses and 20 anti-personnel mines at Touch Bar in the Kalladi area of Batticaloa district.

November 5: Unidentified assailants shot dead two TMVP cadres, including the head of the TMVP office of Eravur near the Murugan Kovil in the Sithandy area of Batticaloa district. The victims were identified as Padmanathan Balakrishnan alias Thangapandiyan, head of the TMVP office in Eravur and Sinnapulle Yogaraja. Police spokesman, Ranjith Gunasekera, said, "Two TMVP members including Chief of the TMVP office Eravur on a motorcycle were shot dead by unidentified suspects."

November 4: Kanthankudi Police recovered one T-56 weapon, two magazines and 59 rounds of T-56 ammunition from the Eravur area of Batticaloa district.

The SFs recovered one camouflage uniform, one anti personnel mine, 33 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, one pistol, one hand-held radio set, one electric detonator, some clothes and food items from the Nagathkulam area of Batticaloa district.

Troops in the Thanganagar area of Trincomalee district recovered 665-g of C-4 explosives, two detonators, 564 ball bearings, 2-ft detonator code and a 9-V battery.

November 2-3: Four Tamil youths were shot dead and another seriously injured by motor bike riding LTTE militants at Kurunchchiady, a coastal locality in the Kalmunai area of Ampara district on November 2. While two died on the spot the other two succumbed to injuries later. The death toll in the shooting incident increased to five as one youth who was severely injured in the shooting succumbed to his injuries on November 3-morning at the Kalmunai hospital. Four of the victims were identified as Jayasekar Nisanthan, Kadiravadively Rajakurendran, Somasundaram Kartik, and Muttupillai Sri Sudaharan.

October 31: Batticaloa Police recovered five claymore mines with remote control devices and 9 V batteries and 30-m long wire from the Navaladi area.

October 28: At least four TMVP members were killed when its political office was attacked by the suspected LTTE cadres at Chenkaladi in the Batticaloa district.

Five people, including three Special Task Force personnel, were injured in a hand grenade attack at Kalladi Bridge in the Batticaloa district.

October 26: The SFs recovered one IED, one claymore mine weighing about 8-kg, eight APMs, 428-meter long copper wire, one solar panel, one 12v battery, two CDMA antennas, one booster and one mobile phone with a charger from the Verugal area of Batticaloa district.

October 25: A suspected LTTE militant lobbed a hand grenade at Al-Husiniya Mosque in the Kaththankudy area of Batticaloa district. The explosion injured five civilians.

Troops recovered one T-56 weapon, a magazine and 30 T-56 rounds of ammunition from the Chippihidal area of Trincomalee district.

October 23: Troops during a search and clear operation in the Bakmitiyawa area of Batticaloa district recovered one 81-mm mortar bomb.

October 22: Five people were injured in a hand grenade attack at Kalladi in the Batticaloa town, the Police said. Police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranjith Gunasekara, said an unidentified assailant lobbed a grenade at the people while they were bathing. All the victims were Sinhalese, from Southern Sri Lanka who worked on the National Water Board project in Kanthankudi.

The STF personnel repulsed an LTTE attack in the Pothuvil area of Ampara district and recovered four mobile phones, one military-type uniform, 80 T-56 ammunition, four T-56 magazines, one water bottle and three field dressings.

October 20: Troops recovered one claymore mine with a remote control device from a location near the Valaichchenai bus stand in the Batticaloa district.

Sri Lankan Government has said that the de-mining process of the Eastern Province is almost finished.

October 16: Police recovered four dead bodies of the farmers in the Kanchkudichchiaru area of Ampara district. According to the sources the farmers were shot dead by unidentified assailants.

One Policeman, identified as Jayaweera, was killed by a militant of the ‘pistol gang’ of the LTTE at the Chenkaladi Police Post in the Batticaloa district.

October 13: Two Army personnel riding on a motorbike along the Thoppigala road in the Veragodella area of Batticaloa district were injured in an LTTE-triggered remote controlled claymore mine explosion.

October 11: At least two activists of the TMVP were killed by an unidentified assailant in Batticaloa. The report said that the assailant fired at the activists in a social club run by the TMVP.

October 10: Troops in the Pallaimadu area of Batticaloa district recovered a claymore mine weighing 7-kg, two APM, a detonating device and a length of 150-m wire.

Troops also recovered six hand grandees from the Navadi area of Batticaloa district.

October 8: During a search operation at Neelaparikkeurodai in the Kuchchaveli area of Trincomalee district, the troops recovered one suicide jacket, two claymore mines, three APMs and three fuses.

October 5: The Serunuwara Police recovered 5000-g of C-4 explosives and one T-56 cleaning rod near the Poonagar School in the Trincomalee district.

October 3: Three LTTE militants were killed after a confrontation with a combined Army-Air Force foot patrol in the eastern village of Kattikulam in the Trincomalee district.

October 2: One TMVP member was shot dead and another injured by suspected LTTE militants in the Thannamunei area of Batticaloa district.

At least one person was injured in a land mine explosion near the TMVP office in the Vandaramulla area of Batticaloa district.

One person was injured when unidentified assailants fired upon a car traveling in the Mailambaveli area of Batticaloa district.

The SFs recovered three 80-mm mortar shells, two 40-mm cartridges and two hand grenades from the Kannagipira area of Ampara district. Separately, the troops recovered one hand grenade from the Achchibokkuwa area.

September 29: The troops recovered one T-56 weapon from the St. Lurdu church graveyard in the Palauttu area of Trincomalee district.

September 29: 20 civilians were injured in an LTTE-triggered hand grenade explosion in the Kaththankudy area of Batticaloa district.

September 28: The STF commandos foiled an infiltration attempt by a group of LTTE militants killing two of the cadres in the Ampara district. According to the MCNS, a STF patrol observed suspicious movement of a boat in the Kodamadu lagoon around 5:00 am (SLST) and confronted the occupants who opened fire at the commandos. The STF troops retaliated and destroyed the boat. During subsequent search operations troops found bodies of two LTTE cadres, along with their weapons including a T-56 gun.

The LTTE militants attacked a TMVP camp in the Batticaloa district killing one person while injuring at least four others.

One militant was killed in an encounter with the SFs in the Koliyankulam area of Batticaloa district.

September 25: The troops recovered 12300 ammunition rounds, one motorbike, two antennas, one VCD player with a remote controller, one video camera, 25 video cassettes, 40 CDs and 42 anti- personnel mines from the Upparu area of Trincomalee district.

September 24: The troops recovered a claymore mine weighing eight kilograms, one suicide jacket, two APMs, two T-56 weapons, six T-56 magazines, 100 T-56 ammunition rounds, four LTTE combat kits, two pouches and one electric detonator from the Pallechchenakulam area of Trincomalee district.

September 23: The SLAF troops recovered 652 MPMG ammunitions from the Trincomalee oil tank farm area.

September 22: The Special Task Force personnel killed an LTTE militant and later recovered T-56 weapon, four magazines, three hand grenades, one Icom radio set, one pack, one binocular, ammunition rounds, ration packets and other webbing equipment from his possession in the Narakamulla sector 2 area of Batticaloa district.

Police conducted a search in the Vakarai, Verugal and Sinnaganga areas of Batticaloa district and recovered five outboard motors of 15 HP hidden in a jungle.

September 21: The Special Task Force personnel in an ambush at Udagova in the Pothuvil area of Ampara district killed two militants and also recovered two hand grenades from their possession.

The chief priest at Trincomalee Koneshwaran Temple, Thivathunaraja Kurukkal, who was maintaining close relations with the SFs was gunned down by ‘pistol gang’ militants of the LTTE while he was riding a motor bike on the Pathima street in Trincomalee.

September 20: The SFs recovered explosives from the Mavilaru south of Trincomalee district.

September 19: The Eravur area leader of the TMVP, identified as Parathawaran Udayan, was shot dead by unidentified assailants, Police said. Police spokesman, Ranjith Gunasekara, said the incident took place near the TMVP area office located in the Thalawai area of Eravur.

The troops recovered seven 152-mm high explosive artillery shells and artillery equipments such as one trail wheel, one equilibrator, one tool box, two seals, four cleaning rods, one oxygen cylinder and one sight box from at Vakarai west in the Thonitattamadu area of Batticaloa district.

During another search operation at Palampatar area in the Muttur town area of Trincomalee district recovered five 60-mm mortar rounds, five 60-mm mortar chargers and 10 hand grenades.

September 18: Two persons were shot dead and another two were severely injured in an attack carried out by unidentified gunmen in the Pannalagama area of Ampara district.

The troops recovered three T- 56 weapons and six magazines from the Meegassooriyapura area of Trincomalee district.

Police recovered 300-grams of C-4 explosives from the Dehiaththakandiya area of Ampara district.

September 17: A female Assistant Engineer, Lokeshwaran Premalatha, attached with the Ministry of Nation Building and actively engaged in the eastern development programme, Negenahira Navodaya (Resurrection of the East), was shot dead by two ‘pistol gang’ militants of the LTTE at her residence at Thihativu in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district.

Four APMs, one detonator code, two IEDs, one map of Padaviya area, 20 T-56 ammunition rounds, two 9-mm pistol ammunition, three batteries and some food items were recovered by the SFs from the Inguruhinna area of Batticaloa district.

September 15: One Civil Defense Force (CDF) member and a civilian were shot dead by suspected LTTE militants in the Mahaoya area of Ampara district.

September 13: Four Police personnel, including a woman Police constable, sustained injuries in a LTTE-triggered claymore mine explosion targeting a Police vehicle near the White Bridge on the Mandur-Wellaveli road of Batticaloa district. One of the injured policeman died later.

The LTTE militants opened fire towards Police personnel on duty at the Thimilathivu Police post in Batticaloa district and killed one policeman.

Naval troops recovered 20-g of gelignite, two electronic detonators and 1.5-m long safety fuse from the Kuchchaveli area of Trincomalee district.

Army recovered 86 anti-personnel mines, two release switches, one pressure switch, 13 anti tank mine covers and one claymore mine from the Kaddaiparichan area of Trincomalee district.

The SFs recovered one Multi Purpose Machine Gun from the Narakamulla area of Batticaloa district.

The SLAF personnel recovered a stock of 185 mortar bomb shells of 82-mm from the inside of tin barrels from the Kandalkadu area of Trincomalee district.

September 12: The SLAF personnel recovered a stock of 185 mortar bomb shells of 82-mm from the inside of tin barrels from the Kandalkadu area of Trincomalee district.

September 10: The troops shot dead an LTTE militant in the Yodiyankattuwa area of Batticaloa district and later recovered a claymore mine, two pen torch batteries, one detonator, one cyanide capsule and a 30-m long wire roll from his possession.

The STF personnel arrested one LTTE militant from the Kalmunai area of Ampara district and subsequently recovered one hand grenade, 90 rounds of T-56 ammunition, three T-56 magazines, two bandages, one mobile phone, three SIM cards, one belt order, one fake Identity Card and one toggle rope.

September 8: The Sri Lankan free lance journalist and former media coordinator of the Eastern Chief Minister, Radhika Devakumar, was shot at and injured by unidentified assailants in Batticaloa.

September 6: The Eastern Province say that the newly elected Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan a.k.a. Pillayan and his party, TMVP are under pressure due to the parents' appeal to return their offspring enlisted by it.

September 4: The LTTE militants detonated a claymore mine targeting the STF personnel at Mailavadduvan in the Vavuvathivu area of Batticaloa district inuring one STF member who died later.

The Eravur Police recovered one T-56 weapon, one Rocket Propeller Gun and 26 rounds of T-56 ammunition from the Sinna Sawkade area of Batticaloa district.

September 3: The LTTE militants opened fire towards SFs at Veniharagama in the Panama area of Ampara district killing two SF personnel.

September 2: The troops recovered one 15-kgs claymore mine, two 60-mm mortar bombs, one APM and a detonator code from the Ethimale and Kumburupiddy areas of Batticaloa district.

August 29: Seven detainees, including six arrestees on murder and an LTTE suspect, were injured in a grenade explosion inside the cells at Batticaloa Prison headquarters.

August 28: Police recovered a 2.5-kg heavy claymore mine, one detonator and a wire roll of 69 ft from the Thorankadu junction, close to Narasinghe Hindu Kovil (Temple) in the Uppuveli Police Division of Trincomalee district.

August 27: Two LTTE cadres were killed and their bodies found subsequently by the SFs at Vellankulam in the Trincomalee district. The slain militants were identified as Viniden, the Trincomalee North area leader, and Kanthan. Two T-56 assault riffles were recovered from the incident site.

The troops recovered 10 chargers containing 700-gram gelignite, five non-electric detonators, four ft safety fuse, one T-56 weapon, one magazine, 30 rounds of ammunition and portable radio set from the Gandhinagar, Kangankungu and Irankulam areas of Trincomalee district.

The SFs recovered two hand grenades and one 5-kg heavy claymore mine from the Kaththankudy area in Batticaloa district.

August 26: The LTTE using a small aircraft dropped two improvised bombs on Trincomalee naval base on August 26-night. The Defence Ministry said the LTTE launched the air raid on the naval camp at about 9:15 pm (SLST). Naval sources confirming the attack on the Trincomalee Navy base said the raid caused minor damages and added that one bomb out of the two dropped failed to explode. 10 sailors were injured in the attack.

The SFs recovered a claymore mine from the Thunadi area of Batticaloa district.

August 24: The STF personnel recovered one T-56 weapon, 114 T-56 ammunition rounds, two magazines, one micro pistol, three micro pistol ammunition rounds and one weapon sling from the Kurukulmadu area of Batticaloa district.

The STF also recovered one anti- personnel mine, one Global Positioning System, one LTTE uniform, one harness pack and one walkman set from the north of Kumbukkanoya in Ampara district.

Three gelignite chargers, each weighing 700 grams, two safety fuses and four non electrical detonators were recovered form the Irrakkandi area of Trincomalee district.

An LTTE militant who attempted to lob a hand grenade towards troops on duty at Chavalakade in the Trincomalee district was shot dead by the SFs. The SFs later recovered the dead body of the slain militant along with one hand grenade from the incident site.

August 21: A Sinhalese student of the Eastern University in the Eravur area of Batticaloa district was shot dead by suspected LTTE militants at around 8.45 pm (SLST) outside the students’ hostel.

August 20: Two civilians, identified as Razik Munefil Mohammed and Mohammed Riyaz, were killed and three others were injured when the LTTE militants opened fire towards a group of 13 civilians collecting firewood in the Wilgamwehera area of Trincomalee district.

August 17: The Kanniya Police recovered found two T-56 magazines, 44 rounds of ammunition and two pouches from the Kalarappu area in Trincomalee district.

August 15: An EPDP member was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Kaththankudy area of Batticaloa district.

Naval troops recovered one claymore mine of 8.5-kgs, 17 gelignite chargers, 13-m of service cord and nine non-electrical detonators from the Irrakkandi area in Trincomalee district.

August 14: A combined patrol team of the STF and Police personnel recovered one 10.8-kgs heavy claymore mine, one T-56 assault rifle, one magazine, 29 T-56 rounds, three detonators and four 9-V batteries along the Damana road, near 55 km post in the Ampara district.

The Special Task Force personnel recovered one T-56 assault rifle, five magazines, 150 ammunition rounds, one power loom machine, one compass, one belt order, forty three 1.45-v batteries and one 9-v battery from the Palukamam area of Batticaloa district.

August 12: The Special Task Force personnel recovered one radio set, one antenna and two APMs from the Batticaloa district.

August 11: Troops recovered one 40-mm grenade launcher, three 40-mm grenades, two claymore mines, 86 rounds of ammunition, eight anti-personnel mines, one radio set, three magazines, 12 water bottles and five LTTE packs from the Thoppigala area of Batticaloa district.

August 10: One LTTE militant was killed by the troops in the Kaththankudy area of Batticaloa district.

The Special Task Force personnel recovered a landmine weighing 15-kilograms, 119000 T-56 cartridges, 70 mortar shells, 216 chargers for 82-mm mortar shells, 72 mortar cartridges, 69 mortar safety fuses, 200 M16 cartridges and 22 T-82 hand grenades from several locations in the Batticaloa district.

August 8: The Special Task Force recovered one 15-kg land mine, 22 hand grenades, 19500 T-56 ammunition rounds, 200 M-16 ammunition rounds, seventeen 82-mm mortar rounds, 216 chargers and 69 safety fuses in the Pavakkudichenai area of Batticaloa district.

August 7: The SLAF ground troops conducting clearing operations in the Peraru area, north of Trincomalee, recovered a stash of newly buried ammunition and explosives, including three claymore mines, 4500 ammo for T-56 riffles, 10 anti-personnel mines, 102 electrical detonators, three-kg of C-4 high explosives and 350 pistol ammunition.

August 5: A soldier was killed and three others were wounded in an LTTE-triggered remote-controlled claymore mine explosion targeting a group of soldiers in the Periyamadduwana area of Batticaloa district.

One soldier was shot at and injured by ‘pistol gang’ cadres of the LTTE at the Kalladi Bridge in Batticaloa. He succumbed to his injuries later.

Police recovered 15 APMs from an abandoned LTTE camp at Sampoor in the Trincomalee district.

August 3: The SFs recovered parts of a T-56 weapon, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) barrel, one pressure mine, 2100 rounds of ammunition, six Rocket Propeller Gun rounds, two 60-mm mortar bombs, one claymore mine of 1.5 kg, two MPMG links and one 90 V car battery at Vameivattavan in the Nakarai area of Batticaloa district.

August 2: The LTTE militants fired at a team of STF personnel on a search operation in the Nevigal Aru area of Ampara district on August 1. The STF personnel retaliated and later recovered the dead body of a militant along with war-like items from the area. Two STF personnel sustained injuries in the incident.

August 1: One Rocket Propeller Gun (RPG) round, two claymore mines of 3.5-kg each, one T-56 magazine, 50 T-56 live rounds, two hand grenades, one LTTE pouch, two RPG chargers and three black overalls were recovered by the police from Uppuveli in Trincomalee district. The SFs also recovered 12 APMs and 100 live rounds of T-56 ammunition from Dangeliyadda in Batticaloa district.

July 31: The troops recovered 1500 rounds of T-56 ammunition, one APM, five 81-mm mortar shells from the Narakamulla area of Batticaloa district. Similarly, the SFs recovered one hand grenade from the Valaichchenai jetty area.

July 26: Troops recovered 15 APMs from the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district.

1130 rounds of T-56 ammunition, 163 APMs, 185 APM fuses, ten 81-mm mortar rounds and one 120-mm mortar round were recovered from Kirimichchiya and Vakarai areas in Batticaloa district.

July 25: Troops recovered one T-56 assault rifle, two T-56 magazines and 60 T-56 rounds of ammunition in Batticaloa district.

The Special Task Force personnel recovered two hand grenades, 46 T-56 rounds of ammunition and two T-56 magazines from the Porativu area in Batticaloa district.

July 24: SFs in the Ariyamankerni area of Batticaloa district unearthed a five-kg heavy claymore mine.

July 23: Police recovered the dead body of a girl at Pulanchimunai in the Batticaloa district.

Another dead body was recovered by the Police from Koviladdy area in Batticaloa district.

July 21: The SFs recovered two T-56 weapons, two magazines and 30 rounds of ammunition from the Eravur area of Batticaloa district.

July 18: The SFs recovered seven claymore mines with stands, two anti personnel mines, one binocular, sixty ammunition, three roles of claymore wire about three-metre, 50-m of flexible wire, three-metre of detonator cords, four cyanide capsules, three camouflage caps, wire cutters, 11 pen torch batteries and some medical items from Akkarayanaweli area north of Tennamaramvady in Trincomalee district.

July 17: The SFs recovered a powerful three-kg heavy claymore mine and two hand grenades from the Valaichchenai Railway Station premises in the Batticaloa district following a tip-off given by a civilian and averted a major bloodbath since a train from Polonnaruwa was expected there a few minutes later. The claymore, two hand grenades, two 9-V batteries and the 120-m long detonator wire had been kept covered, in close proximity to the main entrance of the Railway Station when they were detected by the troops. Similarly, troops in the Muttur area of Trincomalee district recovered one locally made pistol, two RPG rounds, 50 RPG chargers and one hand grenade.

July 15: The Special Task Force personnel recovered eight T-56 weapons, three suicide kits, two suicide kit dummies, one solar panel and 20 video cassettes from the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district.

Two LTTE militants, M. D. Mohan and B. Pradeepan, surrendered before the Uppuveli Police station in Trincomalee district.

July 14: The troops recovered three hand grenades from the Pansalgodalla area of Trincomalee district.

A civilian was injured in a bomb blast in the Ottamawadi area of Batticaloa district.

A family of six, including three children, were arrested by the SFs at Aselapura in the Batticaloa district while transporting food items to the LTTE militants hiding in the jungles.

July 13: The Sri Lanka Air Force troops recovered 460-g of C-4 explosives hidden in a hollow of a tree from the Trincomalee district.

The troops recovered one hand grenade in the Kantale area of Trincomalee district.

Police recovered one claymore mine of 1.5-kg from the Thoppur area Trincomalee district.

The STF troops arrested one LTTE militant along with one hand grenade, one camouflage uniform and one LTTE dog tag from the Wellaveli area of Batticaloa district.

July 11: The troops recovered 30 APMs from the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district.

The SFs recovered 1800 General Purpose Machine Gun rounds, 300 Multi Purpose Machine Gun rounds, 700 T-56 rounds and three 60-mm mortar fuses from the Melancholia area of Batticaloa district.

July 10: Three civilians, identified as Surendra Kumara, Wasantha Premakumara and Asanka Namal Buddhika from the Wattegama area of Kurunegala district, were shot dead by a ‘pistol gang’ militant of the LTTE in the Kalmunai area of Ampara district.

July 9: The troops in Trincomalee arrested a woman carrying a magazine of a mini-ushi type gun.

July 7: The troops recovered one pouch, one 9-V battery, four T-56 magazines and 39 T-56 ammunition rounds from the Ariyamankerni area of Trincomalee district.

The SFs recovered 30 APMs from the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district.

July 6: One LTTE combat trouser, one LTTE pack and parts of one hand-held radio set were recovered during search operations conducted by the troops in the Ariyamankerni area of Trincomalee district.

July 5: Troops on search and clear operations in the Dangeliyadda and Eravur areas of Batticaloa district recovered 52 APMs and one hand grenade.

July 1: Suspected LTTE militants shot dead a businessman in the Abepura Uppuveli area of Trincomalee district.

One LTTE militant was killed and another injured by the security forces while they attempted to snatch the T-56 weapon of an airman serving the Air Force roadblock at Thambalagamuwa in the Kantale area of Trincomalee district.

June 30: The troops recovered two hand grenades from the Kumburupiddy area of Trincomalee district.

June 29: The SFs arrested one suspected militant along with 160-gm of C4 explosives, one detonator and one fuse from the Lanka Patuna area of Trincomalee district.

June 28: Police recovered one sniper gun, two radio sets, five rounds of 303 ammunition, 300 T-56 ammunition, two hand grenades, two T-56 magazines and one 303 magazine during a search operation at Kadakarachchena in the Muttur area of Trincomalee district.

June 27: The troops recovered 100 Multi Purpose Machine Gun ammunition rounds, two 60-mm mortar bombs and one hand grenade from the Manalachchanai Periyavil area of Trincomalee district.

June 24: The SFs recovered one claymore mine weighing two-kg, one anti personnel mine and one hand grenade from the Kahawaththamunai area of Batticaloa district.

June 23: Three policemen were killed and another injured when suspected LTTE militants carried out a bomb explosion near the Aiyththamalai Police post in Batticaloa district.

June 22: Two Police personnel were killed in a LTTE-triggered claymore mine explosion at Kaludaweli in the Valaichchenai area of Batticaloa district. One civilian passer-by was also injured in the explosion.

A civilian, identified as Ravi Tharoshan, was shot dead at his residence in Trincomalee by an unidentified motorbike-riding assailant.

The STF personnel repulsed an LTTE attack towards a group of STF personnel on a search operation at Kaludaweli in the Valaichchenai area of Batticaloa district and subsequently recovered the dead body of one militant along with two hand grenades and one cyanide capsule.

June 21: The residence of Porathivupattu Pradeshiya Sabha (Village Council) Vice Chairman at Wellaveli in the Batticaloa district came under fire directed by an unidentified. Two TMVP members in the house were injured in the incident.

32 anti personnel mines were recovered by the SFs during a search operation in the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district.

June 20: Army troops conducting search and clear operations in the Dangeliyadda area of Batticaloa district recovered 15 anti personnel mines.

Troops recovered one browser with the capacity of 3000 litre while it ad been abandoned at the Tractor junction in Batticaloa district.

June 19: Two Police Constables were shot dead by two motorbike riding LTTE militants at Kalmunai in the Samanthurai town area of Ampara district. The victims were identified as Mohammed Ismail Gazali and Sandanadan Ramesh.

The SFs killed LTTE’s intelligence wing leader for Trincomalee, Soundrarajan alias Thangan, during a clearing operation at Manachchena in the east of Neelapola. He had been entrusted the clandestine operation since January, this year after his predecessor, Ari Chelvam was killed by the Army.

June 16: One soldier was injured after LTTE cadres opened fire at Akkaraipattu in the Ampara district.

During another search operation in the Periyamadduwana area of Batticaloa district the troops recovered six hand grenades.

June 14: The troops on search and clear operations in the Pangasgodalla Watta north area of Trincomalee district recovered a Multi Purpose Machine Gun.

June 12: The SFs arrested and subsequently killed an LTTE militant, who attempted to lob hand grenades towards them, at Kanniya in the Trincomalee district. The militant was reportedly carrying one-kg of C-4 explosives, two hand grenades and a two-meter long detonator cord.

June 11: The security forces recovered one 1.5-kg claymore and two magazines from the Track Junction area of Batticaloa district.

June 10: Three ‘pistol gang’ militants of the LTTE were gunned down during a Police and Army combined cordon and search operation at Pallikudiruppu in the Akkaraipattu area of Ampara district. Reports said that a group of three militants had opened fire and lobbed a hand grenade at the SF personnel engaged in the search operation. The SF personnel had retaliated killing two militants on the spot while the other who had managed to escape was chased and shot dead later.

The troops recovered three boxes of T-56 ammunition from the Kaddamuruvikulam area of Batticaloa district.

June 7: The troops recovered one Rocket Propeller Gun round, one hand grenade, three magazines, 450 rounds of ammunition and one Light Machine Gun link belt with 60 rounds of ammunition from the Arsanagar area of Trincomalee district.

Troops recovered one binocular, two antennas, one T-81 weapon and two hand grenades from the Kattidankulam area of Trincomalee district.

During another search operation in the Kandalkadu area of Trincomalee district, the SFs found one T-56 weapon, four magazines, one pouch and 109 rounds of ammunition.

June 6: The SFs recovered 1500 rounds of ammunition and 23 pouches from the Kumpanachchi area of Batticaloa district.

June 4: The troops recovered 840 T-56 ammunition rounds, two 60-mm mortar bombs, three 81-mm mortar bombs, three Rocket Propeller Grenades, three T-56 magazines, one electric detonator and 100g of C-4 explosives from the Navamillanawewa area in Batticaloa district.

June 2: The TMVP Eravurpattu Pradeshiya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Aiyathurai Pushpanadan alias Kattan, and his bodyguard, Arsakoon Pullai Mohandas alias Amburaj, were shot dead by suspected ‘pistol gang’ militants of the LTTE at Eruvur in the Kalawanchikudi area of Batticaloa district.

The Police have imposed a curfew following unrest in the Kathankudy town of Batticaloa district. "Police curfew has been enforced from 5:45 p.m. (1215 GMT) this evening until 6 a.m. (0030 GMT) tomorrow," Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekera said in Colombo. Problems have flared up between the Muslim and Tamil communities in the Eastern Province since the Eastern Provincial Council election held on May 10.

May 31: The SFs recovered one T-56 weapon, two magazines and 29 rounds of ammunition from Pethale in the Batticaloa district.

May 30: An unidentified assailant fired at a member of the Civil Defence Force (CDF) and one Army soldier who was near Lamputhel bend on the Dehiwatta - Neelapola road in Serunuwara area of Trincomalee district. While the CDF trooper was killed in the incident, the soldier escaped unhurt.

May 26: The TMVP leader and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan admitted that members of his organisation were responsible for the recent abductions at Eravur in Batticaloa. Admitting that the abductors were TMVP members, he said they had been handed over to Police, but insisted the accused men were not directly involved in the incident. The abductions of the Muslim youth on May 22, who are yet to be returned, led to widespread communal tension in Eravur, compelling the Government to impose a curfew. Two others were abducted a few days later, but released the next day. Meanwhile, a woman was killed in SFs firing as the SFs tried to disperse crowds in Eravur who took to the streets to protest the abduction.

May 24: The STF personnel during a cordon and search operation recovered two T -56 assault riffles, three T -56 magazines, 80 T- 56 live ammunition and one hand grenade from the Sathurukanda area of Batticaloa district.

The STF personnel recovered five 40-mm grenade launcher rounds from the Thikkode area of Ampara district.

May 23: The LTTE militants triggered a claymore mine explosion targeting troops on foot patrol along the road in the Bakmitiyawa area of Ampara district, injuring one soldier who died later.

The SFs recovered nine T-56 weapons, 13 magazines, six hand grenades, 25 detonators and 2-kg of C-4 explosives kept concealed in the bushes and trees at Peraru in the Trincomalee district.

May 22: Two members of the TMVP and three civilians were killed and four other people were wounded by unidentified assailants in two separate incidents. "Two TMVP cadres, including the party's chief organiser for Katankudi, were shot dead by unidentified gunmen around 11.15 a.m. In a separate incident, also at Arayampathi in Katankudi area, three Muslim civilians were killed by unidentified gunmen around 12.45 p.m.," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

One soldier was injured when the LTTE militants detonated two claymore mines targeting an Army route picket point in the Komari-Urani area of Akkaraipattu in the Ampara district.

May 20: Suspected LTTE militants shot dead one Police Constable in the Mamakkama junction area of Batticaloa district.

The LTTE militants opened fire targeting the Rupaskulam STF camp in the Ampara district, injuring one STF trooper.

May 16: One police constable, identified as Asanka, was shot dead by ‘pistol gang’ militants of the LTTE at Nochchimunai in the Kaththankudy area of Batticaloa district.

The troops recovered one claymore mine from the Miravodai area of Batticaloa district.

The STF personnel recovered one T -56 assault rifle, one 303 rifle, one T-56 magazine, 70 rounds of T-56 ammunition and one hand grenade from the Shanthimale area of Batticaloa district.
